As associate dean, James Castonguay, Ph.D., is responsible for undergrad and graduate programs within the School of Communication, Media & the Arts.

Castonguay joined Sacred Heart University in 1999, working previously at the University of Michigan. Castonguay was the founding chair of SHU’s department of media studies and digital culture in 2003 and served as the first director of graduate programs in the department of communication and media studies.

Castonguay has been widely published in several academic journals, books and other publications, including, but not limited to, American Quarterly, Cinema Journal, Discourse, The Hitchcock Annual, Rethinking Global Security, Hollywood and War, the Encyclopedia of Television and the Schirmer Encyclopedia of Film. He has also written for the human rights magazine, Witness, and has collaborated on multimedia documentaries and exhibitions that focus on issues of social justice.
He has received many accolades throughout his time at SHU including the “Final Four” Teaching Award and the Faculty Excellence Award. He has served as an administrative officer to the American Council of Learned Societies and received the service award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
