Creation of the Institute for Sustainability and Social Justice (ISSJ) is major ongoing project of Sacred Heart University that is moving from a conceptual design phase to an active development phase intended to engage all members of the University community in a constructive dialog to co-create its priorities and initiatives.
The Institute was conceived to be University wide interdisciplinary and intercollegiate center with the mission to support exploration of, and solutions to, how society can meet the holistic human need for living with meaning and purpose without compromising the ability of future generations to achieve the same. A primary goal of the institute is to contribute to achieving the university’s mission as an organization that, “embraces a vision for social justice and educates students in mind, body and spirit to prepare them personally and professionally to make a difference in the global community.”
Sustainable development and social justice are inextricably linked at the community, national and global levels and one cannot exist without the other. The Institute will highlight and provide support for interdisciplinary initiatives exploring the complex relationships between human and natural systems, economic structures, legal frameworks, socio-political forces, and governmental policy. The ISSJ will work through examination of diverse societal, economic, cultural and ecological lenses.
