Suber Wins First Tournament of his Ole Miss Golf Career

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala.Jackson Suber tied a school record on his way to medalist honors, and the Ole Miss men's golf team posted the round of the day (-6) to wrap up the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

Securing his first victory as a Rebel, Suber fired a final round 66 (-4) to erase a three-shot deficit and finish in a tie atop the leaderboard at 12-under alongside Mississippi State's Ford Clegg. Suber's three-round total of 198 (67-65-66) tied Braden Thornberry for the lowest 54-hole score in school history.

"Suber has been close to winning over the past couple of seasons, so it was great to see him finally break through," said head coach Chris Malloy. "There is nobody that has more confidence and higher expectations for him than me. I believe this will be the first of many wins for Jackson."

As a team, Ole Miss moved up the leaderboard with the field's best round of the day. A 6-under 274 also put the Rebels at 6-under for the tournament (279-281-274—834), good enough for a fifth-place finish. Both 18-hole and 54-hole team totals marked the fifth-best in program history.

"I am extremely proud of this group for the way that they have played over the past two tournaments," said Malloy. "We have not had our best stuff as a group over this three-tournament stretch, but they never gave up. They could have easily packed it in and felt sorry for themselves, but instead they finished off our fall season with the lowest round of the day. That says a lot about who this group is, and there is no doubt that this is a sign of great things to come this spring."

Beginning his day in third and three shots behind Clegg, Suber got off to a hot start with back-to-back birdies. He added two more, taking advantage of the par-4 fifth and the par-4 ninth, to make the turn with a bogey-free 31 (-4). The Tampa, Florida, native dominated the par 4s throughout the week, playing them in 9-under par.

After three straight pars to start his final nine, Suber encountered consecutive bogeys to drop back to 10-under. However, the sophomore bounced back with a birdie on No. 15. Another birdie on the long par-3 17th pushed Suber into sole possession of first place, and a par to close out his round gave him the lead in the clubhouse at 12-under. With Ole Miss being one of the first teams on the course, Suber had to wait and watch as Clegg birdied his final two holes to grab a share of medalist honors.

"I got off to a hot start with birdies on the first two and kept that momentum throughout the front nine," said Suber. "I struggled a little on the back nine with par saves on 11 and 12 and then back-to-back bogeys, but I found a way to turn around and pick up two birds on the way in."

Matching Suber's final round of 66 was Sarut Vongchaisit, who carded his lowest round of the season. The Bangkok, Thailand, native birdied No. 1 and made a bogey at the seventh before he rattled off three birdies in a row. A par on No. 12 followed by another birdie pushed Vongchaisit to 4-under on his round. Five straight pars to end his day capped a bogey-free final 11 holes, moving the sophomore 21 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 35th at 2-over (74-72-66—212).

Jack Gnam was the first Rebel on the course, setting the tone with an even-par 70 that featured three birdies and three bogeys. Brett Schell was consistent throughout the week, shooting 72 all three rounds to tie for 44th alongside teammate Veeti Mahonen at 6-over.

The fifth-place finish against a tough field of SEC opponents put a cap on the Rebels' fall season. Making progress throughout the past month, the team will look to take that momentum into the spring.
