Track & Field Sends Program Record 16 Entries to NCAA Outdoor Championships

6/7/2021 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field will send a school record 16 total entries from 16 student-athletes to compete on the highest stage of the collegiate track season at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships, which returns to TrackTown USA at the University of Oregon's newly renovated Hayward Field from June 9-12.

The finest athletes in Division I will descend upon Eugene this week for the four-day meet, which is split into men's competition (June 9 & 11) and women's competition (June 10 & 12). To get to this point, student-athletes needed to qualify for their respective NCAA Regional Preliminary Round Championship (East or West), and then needed to finish within the top-12 of their events at the regional meet in order to punch their ticket to Oregon. Athletes competing in either the decathlon or heptathlon needed only to finish within the top-12 nationally by the end of the regular season.

Those 24 total athletes will not only be competing for team or individual national championships, but also to grasp one of the coveted top-eight scoring spots for First-Team All-American status. Places nine through 16 receive Second Team All-American honors, and the remaining eight competitors receive Honorable Mention All-American distinction.

This marks the first NCAA Championship meet at Oregon after Hayward Field received extensive renovations immediately following the 2018 national meet in preparation for what was originally supposed to be the 2021 World Athletics Championships (which were postponed to 2022 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic). Hayward Field has been the home of Oregon track & field since 1921, and has hosted numerous high-end competitions, including 16 NCAA Championship meets (1962, '64, '72, '78, '84, '88, '91, '96, 2001, '10, '13, '14, '15, '16, '17, '18), seven USA Track & Field Championships (1986, '93, '99, 2001, '09, '11), and six U.S. Olympic Trials (1972, '76, '80, 2008, '12, '16) – with the 2021 Trials for the Tokyo Olympic Games set to return as well on June 18-27.

Ole Miss will be looking to recapture some fabled Hayward Magic, adding to a strong Rebel history at the national meet. Across both the men's and women's indoor and outdoor seasons, 21 Rebels have won NCAA titles and 184 have earned First-Team All-American honors, while as a team Ole Miss has tallied 30 top-25 team finishes and scored 623.5 total national points. In six years under head coach Connie Price-Smith, seven Rebels have won NCAA titles, 54 have earned First-Team All-American honors, seven Rebel teams have finished in the top-25 and have scored 143 total NCAA points.

Competition opens Wednesday for Ole Miss on Day One with two high-powered opportunities for the No. 25 Rebel men in the 1500-meter semifinal from Mario Garcia Romo (Heat One) and Waleed Suliman (Heat Two) at 7:16 p.m. CT. The duo have ranked among the best in the nation in the event all season long, with Suliman entering ranked fifth at his U.S. Olympic Trials standard 3:36.53, and Garcia Romo eighth at 3:37.17. However, they both face perhaps the most daunting field in NCAA history that includes six sub-3:37 runners – led by collegiate record holder Yared Nuguse of Notre Dame (3:34.68).

The Rebels will also have duplicated representation in the men's 800-meter semifinal at 8:44 p.m. CT, with Baylor Franklin (Heat One) and John Rivera Jr. (Heat Three) looking to advance for Ole Miss. Other Rebel men competing on Day One include Cole Colozzo in the men's pole vault final (7:30 p.m. CT), Kenney Broadnax in Heat One of the men's 110-meter hurdles semifinal (8:02 p.m. CT) and Allen Gordon in his first of two events in Oregon in Flight One of the men's long jump final (8:30 p.m. CT). Gordon will return to Hayward on Day Three (June 11) in the men's high jump final, which is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.

The Ole Miss women, meanwhile, will open competition on Day Two (June 10) with a pair in the women's hammer final. Jalani Davis (Flight One) and Shey Taiwo (Flight Two) will hit the ring for the Rebels, the first of three events on the docket for Davis this week. She will get a few hours off after the hammer before throwing in Flight Two of the women's shot put final at 7:40 p.m. CT, and she will make a return trip to Hayward Field on Day Four (June 12) to throw in Flight Two of the women's discus final at 4:35 p.m. CT.

Action will begin on the track for the Rebel women at 5:32 p.m. CT on Day Two, with the quartet of Olivia Womack, Brandee Presley, Jayda Eckford and Toni Glatz representing Ole Miss in the women's 4x100-meter relay semifinals – the sixth straight year a Rebel relay team has qualified in the event. Following the relay will be appearances by first-time national qualifiers Lyndsey Reed in the women's pole vault final (6 p.m. CT) and Kieshonna Brooks in Flight Two of the women's long jump final (7 p.m. CT), before Clio Ozanne-Jaques wraps up in the women's 10K final at 8:08 p.m. CT.

Competition on Friday and Saturday will vary based on finals qualifying for the track events. Ole Miss will be looking to advance men's runners to Friday in the 110-meter hurdles, 800-meter and 1500-meter races, while the Rebel women's potential for finals on Saturday rests on the 4x100-meter relay.
