With each new dawn, the celestial body known only as 'Calamity' draws closer - and with it the end of the world. Humanity's only hope from oblivion rests in the menhirs, towering bastions of scholarship and imagination which cast long shadows across the lands. The scholars within the menhirs devote themselves selflessly to the discovery of new magic that will help avert the impending apocalypse ... or so the masses have been made to understand.

In a society divided between those with occult potential and lay citizens, Tara Langcraw is recruited into the Amber Menhir with great interest. The long-awaited heiress of a bloodline bearing the rarest of the six magical disciplines, time manipulation, she is expected to flourish within this noble citadel of learning, as are her friends and fellow recruits, Roland Ward and Peony Bianchi.

They soon find, however, that those who fail to meet expectations, or who dare to challenge the prevailing order, put more than their marks on the line. For the menhir squirms with rivalries, and those who stand against the status quo may not stand for very long.

An Amazing Immersive Fantasy Adventure
The beautiful imagery pulls you in first, then you meet the characters who you either love, hate, or both. If you're looking for a new fantasy series to immerse yourself in, then you need this book now.In a world where the Menhirs hold great power, questions about societal structures and how corruption grows come into play. Gripping stories and lots of thought-provoking abound. I can't wait for the next book in this new series by an author who deserves huge accolades for his debut.

The Amber Menhir by Jonathan Pruitt
This book was recommended to me by a friend.
It is a nice thick book, not a short story. I like long reads or series so that I can truly invest in the story.
The beginning is a bit rough around the edges, some of the descriptions are bit thin.
I’m not to clear on the magic system, but it seemed to follow consistent rules.
Best of all, for me; This is the first book in years where I had to stretch my reading vocabulary!
I enjoyed this story. While everything was wrapped up nicely by the end, I would truly enjoy another story in the same world, if not a continuation of these characters.
Thank you for this fantasy Mr. Pruitt.

In "The Amber Menhir," I delved into a thought-provoking fantasy narrative that masterfully intertwines themes of magic, society, and individuality. The tale revolves around Tara Langcraw, an heiress of a rare bloodline blessed with the ability to manipulate time, and her enrollment in the enigmatic Amber Menhir. Set against the impending cataclysm of 'Calamity,' the world is divided into two classes: those with magical aptitudes and the lay citizens. The author crafts a compelling exploration of aptitude inheritance and societal divisions, expertly weaving these themes into the narrative.

What sets "The Amber Menhir" apart is its intricate character dynamics, notably the evolving relationship between Tara and Roland Ward, an ascendant colleague with a talent for questioning the status quo. Tara's lineage, steeped in tradition and heritage, serves as a powerful contrast to Roland's inquisitive nature. This juxtaposition offers a rich exploration of personal identity and the potential for change, which adds depth to the story. The author skillfully navigates the interplay between the two, delving into themes of magical aptitude, family legacies, and the mysteries of their future at the Amber Menhir. The book's well-paced narrative and captivating characters make it a compelling read for those who appreciate fantasy tales with thought-provoking depth.

Jonathan Pruitt has created a story that redefines fantasy literature, making him my new favorite author. He overturns many well-worn tropes, casting aside the expected stories of heroes and predestined saviors. Instead, Pruitt offers us protagonists that shine through their wit and strategy, ensuring that victories are well-earned rather than given by magic. Pruitt plays with readers' anticipations, setting them up for one expectation only to serve an out-of-left-field twist. But my favorite ever, is the giant cats which adds a layer of unique charm, proving that his work isn't just smart but also fun.

Loved, loved, loved this book. For us nerds who wanted to know what academically oriented despotism with powerful magic looks like here's your answer. Has a similar dark inevitability like Chronicles of the Black Company, but with an orientation to those just entering academia. Really enjoyed the main character, Tara, and the complexity of the magic system developed in this world.

The first book had great twists and turns and a good resolution, but cannot wait for the next book in the series. Would highly recommend to any non-fiction or fantasy aficianado.
