A changing Arctic — walrus migration, glacier runoff and climate systems

Nov 18, 2022 at 1:30 pm 2:30 pm

Three International Arctic Research Center scientists are visiting University of Alaska Southeast to give a seminar titled, “A changing Arctic: walrus migration, glacier runoff and climate systems.” The lecture is on November 18 at 1:30 p.m. in Eagan lecture hall.

Join Olivia Lee, Joanna Young and Vladimir Alexeev as they share perspectives on how individual species to whole systems are changing in the Arctic. UAS scientists Heidi Pearson will moderate the discussion.

Talk details:

  • Olivia Lee, increasingly unpredictable walrus migration and impacts on Indigenous communities.
  • Joanna Young, downstream impacts from meltwater changes from shrinking glaciers.
  • Vladimir Alexeev, how a warmer Bering Sea with less sea ice is disrupting jet streams. He’ll also reflect on understanding climate systems from different mindsets and through unique collaborations like that with the Juneau Composers Consortium.

All four scientists are part of the Climate Soundscapes projects with the Juneau Composers Consortium and Con Brio Chamber Series that turns science into music. Two concerts will follow the science seminar, one on Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and the other on Nov. 19 at 2:00 p.m.

More details coming soon.
