The Holman Arts and Media Center invites artists of all skill levels to Lake Tahoe for its annual Summer Arts Workshops. Attendees will spend five days in an intensive creative experience led by internationally recognized sculptors, painters, videographers, photographers and mixed-media artists.
Workshop participants will leave having expanded their creative skillset while in a stunning natural setting. Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada have long been sources of creative inspiration for artists of all mediums. The Holman Arts and Media Center is within walking distance from the shores of Lake Tahoe and situated amidst miles of hiking and walking trails in the Sierra Nevada.

Plein Air Landscape Oil Painting
Explore the excitement and challenges of painting the Sierra Nevada landscape “En Plein Air" with local artist, Phyllis Shafer. Appropriate for all skill levels, this workshop will cover the basics of landscape oil painting.

Photographing the Natural Landscape
Working with digital cameras, you will capture the varied terrain of this vibrant, colorful region. This is an opportunity to strengthen your Photoshop skills and improve your technical abilities while clarifying your vision.

Finding Form: Coil-Built Vessels
This workshop will introduce a coil and pinch technique for building vessels. Coil and pinch is a fundamental ceramic process. We will discuss how to achieve clear transitional edges, dramatic cantilevered planes, and full curves.

Small Works, Big Impact
Working with porcelain clay, this workshop explores surface using both ceramic processes and mix-media. Participants will make small, yet impactful porcelain sculptures destined for wall display or wearable art.

The Ergonomic Pouring Pot
Study the ergonomic aspects of pouring pots, from simple ewers to elegant pitchers, teapots, and coffee pots. Diving into the world of utilitarian pottery, we will focus on fluidity of form and function.

Fast Fire Pottree I
Demonstrating a wide variety of throwing, decorating, and firing techniques, Randy and Don will help you hone your pottery skills. This workshop will focus on fast-fired decorative processes including raku, copper matte luster, alcohol reduction, fuming with chlorides, horsehair, and low-fire salt saggar firing.

Abstracting Landscape with Mixed Media Painting
Engage with the ways landscape can be expressed through different colors, shapes, and textures. Building on these ideas, we will experiment with mixing and layering mediums, creating texture, and introducing organic materials to create unique compositions.

Soda Fired Pottree
Get introduced to new techniques to produce special effects on sculptural and functional work using a high-fire soda kiln. Explore shape, form, and function while expanding your throwing abilities and creating interesting new forms.

Prints, Patterns and Place: Relief Printmaking
Enjoy hands-on printmaking techniques while exploring nature and community with light walks and conversation. You can expect to leave with finished prints on paper and fabric and a better understanding of printmaking. This workshop is for beginners and experienced makers looking to find and expand their visual language.
