About Us

Who we are

The Association for Meat, Poultry and Seafood Innovation, a not-for-profit association, represents the leading food companies dedicated to producing meat, poultry and seafood directly from animal cells, and is committed to helping advance the cell-based/cultivated meat industry and provide a science-based unified voice for this ever-changing industry to stakeholders, industry partners, policymakers, advocates and consumers.

What we do

Together, we work to educate the public about our industry and advocate for the policies and programs that is needed to continue to create a safe, fair and transparent pathway to market in the U.S. for our cell-cultured/cultivated meat products. We aim to create an environment for our industry that will support continued innovation for years to come.

About cell-cultured/cultivated meat, poultry and seafood

Our companies produce real meat, poultry and seafood directly from animal cells. Through appropriate regulatory pathways, products like cultivated chicken are in restaurants with more expected in the near future. We expect additional meat and seafood products to follow in restaurants and eventually grocery store shelves around the United States.

AMPS Innovation member companies are committed to this work because we believe that cell-cultured/cultivated meat, poultry and seafood will be a critical and sustainable component, in partnership with the overall agriculture sector, to meeting increased demand for animal protein as the world’s population continues to grow.

Current U.S. cell-cultured/cultivated meat regulatory landscape

March 2019: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a formal agreement by which they plan to jointly regulate food products derived from the cells of livestock and poultry.

March 2019: The FDA will oversee cell collection, cell banks, and cell growth and differentiation, while the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will oversee the production and labeling of these food products, just as FSIS regulates other meat and poultry. This joint framework would not apply to cell-cultured/cultivated seafood, as seafood is regulated by FDA.

November 2022: The FDA provided the first ever U.S. No Questions Letter to UPSIDE Foods, concluding that the company’s cultivated chicken is safe.

March 2023: The FDA provided the second ever No Questions Letter to GOOD Meats concluding they agree with the company that their cultivated chicken is safe.

June 2023: The USDA provided the first ever US Grants of Inspection for Cell-Cultivated Chicken. Finalizing a comprehensive evaluation, allowing cultivated chicken to be served in restaurants and eventually in grocery stores.

July 2023: Select restaurants in the U.S. started serving cell-cultivated chicken.

While cultivated meat, poultry, and seafood products are currently in various stages of R&D, we are committed to working with USDA and FDA to provide additional clarity and ensure the highest levels of safety and transparency are applied to cell-based products. By working through appropriate regulatory pathways, we anticipate approvals for cell-cultured products, such as beef and seafood, to be served in more restaurants and offered in grocery store shelves around the U.S.
