“Making music is a form of therapy and confession. It just gives you a serotonin boost; I think that’s a superpower.”

In 2020, Evans dropped his soulful debut EP, Take Time, featuring the single “Heartbreak Anniversary,” which was nominated last year for a Grammy. Appearances on Drake’s hit “Chicago Freestyle” and Justin Bieber’s chart-topping “Peaches” followed. Now Evans is gearing up to release his first full-length album, which he says will provide a window on his world since his meteoric rise. “It’s about what it’s like to go through romance and life in general with this newfound attention,” he explains. “It’s about me trying to figure out who I can trust and what’s authentic.” For this issue, the 26-year-old Long Beach, California, native curated a playlist around the theme of joy by selecting songs that he associates with bright, warm colors. Along with Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness,” Evans included “Good Life” by Kanye West for the nostalgia it induces; “The Beach,” a Take Time track that he describes as his “hometown anthem”; and “Slide” by Calvin Harris, featuring Frank Ocean and Migos. “That came out during the summer when I was a server at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company,” he says of the Harris song. “I was like, ‘Yo, I have a job! Life is good!’ ”
