A Tiny Step Forward is a charming, seemingly simple group of lessons about remembering lost loved ones. Yet its message is remarkably sophisticated. Many children who suffer a loss, either through death or divorce, feel compelled to hide their feelings for fear of upsetting others or opening painful wounds. Charlene Khaghan and Jill Starishevsky allow children to think lovingly about shared past times and to fantasize about the absent friend or family member who they know would take great pride in their accomplishments. This book will be a comfort to children everywhere.

-Clarice Kestenbaum, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry,

Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons

While there are many books on the market for adults on the subject of how to help grieving children, there are few books written specifically for children. Charlene Khaghan and Jill Starishevsky write purely and authentically from the point of view of a child who is moving through the pain of loss and subsequent grief. As fierce advocates for children, the authors have an innate understanding of the "roller-coaster" of emotions that a child suffering through loss experiences and express those emotions beautifully and with a positive eye to the future. This book is a must-have for any child suffering from the loss of a loved one.

-Carole Brody Fleet, award-winning and bestselling author,

"Widows Wear Stilettos..." and "Happily EVEN After..."

This book is a must read for any child who has lost a loved one. It is well written in a clever rhyming pattern and the illustrations will evoke warm feelings of comfort and love. The blank page at the end of the book is a place for the reader to attach a photo and write his/her own thoughts and memories.

Both children and adults will find A Tiny Step Forward, a book about grief and loss relatable, comforting, and authentic. Charlene Khaghan was able to capture the every day ups and downs one encounters when experiencing a loss. She was able to do so because of her first hand experience with the death of a loved one and because she was a source of support to her five children during/after this loss. In addition, Charlene is very knowledgeable in the subject matter because of her clinical experience as a licensed social worker. She holds both a Master’s degree in Social Work and a Master’s degree in Special Education. This is a must read for those who have experienced a loss and for those wanting to help a loved one who is struggling.

This beautifully written book is relatable to both children and adults. A Tiny Step Forward speaks to your heart and connects to your soul. The author, Charlene Khaghan draws from her own tremendous loss, that left her and her five children with a heart wrenching void. The simple words and wonderful illustrations both comfort and validate the feelings of loss that permeate every day events. Children can draw solace and reassurance from this wonderful book that clearly indicates that there is a beacon of hope after tragedy. It justifies feelings of happiness and joy after death, without guilt, but as a process of mourning. I kept turning back the pages and imagining myself with my own father in the daily activities. Highly recommended!!!

This is a beautifully written book that brought a tear to my eye. It’s a compassionate book for helping young ones better understand how to deal with loss. It is a gentle and therapeutic walk through the various emotions and feelings that inevitably accompany the loss of a loved one, and explains how these feelings are completely normal and will ultimately lead to feeling better with time. I highly recommended this book for any family who sadly needs to deal with the loss of a loved one.
