Red Sox activated Rob Refsnyder from the 10-day injured list.

Refsnyder will join the Red Sox after starting the regular season on the injured list. The plan was for the 33-year-old to get reps at first base, but now that the team placed Tyler O’Neill on the 7-day IL, Refsnyder will likely play his primary position in the outfield.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters that Rafael Devers (knee) is getting an MRI.

Cora said that the MRI is more for peace of mind than anything else, but an MRI is still an MRI. He added that Devers wasn’t feeling great and had trouble staying on his leg on Wednesday. The 27-year-old was removed from Tuesday’s game against the Guardians when he experienced discomfort in his left knee. We’ll have to wait and see if the MRI revels anything significant, but it adds to the laundry list of injuries the Red Sox are dealing with earlier on this season.

PIT Starting Pitcher #30

Pirates RHP prospect Paul Skenes needs more time to build up before the Pirates call him up to the majors, according to general manager Ben Cherington.

There was speculation that this year’s No. 1 overall pick would get the nod to fill a hole in Pittsburgh’s rotation with Marco Gonzales on the injured list, but the team still wants to give him more reps at the minor league level. Despite the team’s decision, Skenes is dominating at the Triple-A level where he has yet to allow a run in his first three starts. The 21-year-old has struck out 19 batters in his 9 1/3 innings to open the season. “We don’t want to go from zero to 100 right away.,” Pirates GM Ben Cherington said. “Paul’s so important to us long term, so we want to be really thoughtful about that.”

TEX Starting Pitcher #83

Rangers selected the contract of RHP Jack Leiter from Triple-A Round Rock.

It’s official. The 23-year-old right-hander will get his first major league start against the Tigers on Thursday. Leiter has made three appearances (two starts) at the Triple-A level this season where he’s posted a 4.40 ERA with an impressive 25/3 K/BB ratio.
Robert Stephenson

The Angels announced on Wednesday that right-hander Robert Stephenson will miss the entire 2024 season due to an elbow injury.

Well, that was unexpected. Stephenson had been rehabbing a shoulder injury but was pulled from his latest outing on Saturday after facing just one hitter. The Angels will have another announcement on Thursday where they’ll provide further detail and a potential timeline for Stephenson’s return. Incumbent closer Carlos Estevez’s job security looks a bit stronger based on this development.
Mike Trout

Mike Trout went 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk in a 5-4 win over the Rays on Wednesday.

Trout is sure starting the season like a superstar with something to prove. He blasted his eighth homer of the season on Wednesday with a solo shot off Zack Littell in the first inning and later drew a walk. The 32-year-old slugger is now slashing .282/.363/.690 with the eight homers, 12 runs scored, 11 RBI, and three steals across 80 plate appearances.
Tanner Houck

BOS Starting Pitcher #89

Tanner Houck struck out nine batters over nine scoreless innings in a complete game shutout win over the Guardians.

Houck was incredible Wednesday against the Guardians. He faced just two batters over the minimum, scattering three base hits with no walks. Houck had his slider working, generating 11 whiffs on the pitch and 19 total to strike out nine batters. The 27-year-old right-hander will look to build on the dominant performance when he takes a 1.35 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and a 28/2 K/BB ratio across 26 2/3 innings into a rematch against the Guardians in Cleveland next week.
Kyle Schwarber

PHI Left Fielder #12

Kyle Schwarber went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI to power the Phillies to a 7-6 win over the Rockies on Wednesday.

Schwarber put the Phillies on the board right away with a solo homer off Ryan Feltner to lead off the first inning. He connected once again in the sixth, taking Peter Lambert deep for a two-run shot. The 31-year-old slugger is up to five homers with 13 runs scored and nine RBI while slashing .233/.325/.438 across 83 plate appearances.
Cristopher Sanchez

PHI Starting Pitcher #61

Cristopher Sánchez struck out 10 batters with one unearned run allowed across six innings in a win over the Rockies on Wednesday.

Sánchez was outstanding at home against the Rockies. A base hit and an error put a pair of runners on in the first inning before Colorado brought an unearned run in on a groundout. It would be the only run scored on Sánchez. He tossed five more scoreless innings, scattering five hits and one walk while striking out a season-high ten batters on 17 whiffs. The 27-year-old left-hander ends the day with a 2.53 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and a 25/8 K/BB ratio across 21 1/3 innings. He’s in line for a start against the Reds in Cincinnati on Tuesday.
Erick Fedde

CWS Starting Pitcher #20

Erick Fedde tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings with five strikeouts in a win over the Royals on Wednesday.

Fedde bounced back with a solid start against the Royals on Wednesday after struggling in his last outing. He worked around three baserunners through five shutout innings before leaving with two runners on and two outs in the sixth at 94 pitches. The 31-year-old right-hander struck out five. Fedde will take a 3.10 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a 19/8 K/BB ratio across 20 1/3 innings into a start against the Twins in Minnesota next week.
