Tribute to Muddy Waters

Chicago blues legend Muddy Waters is honored in this colorful, nine-story mural on State Street, by Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra.

The mural was completed in 2016 and curated, co-produced, and co-facilitated by Lindsey Meyers and Simone Garcia of the Chicago-based art production team Beauty & Brawn. Beauty & Brawn invited globally recognized Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra to travel to the United States to participate in the Big Walls Festival in May 2016. This large-scale mural festival was presented by the Wabash Arts Corridor and Columbia College Chicago and was the first of its kind in Chicago. Kobra, an internationally acclaimed Brazilian street artist, creates massively scaled murals of famous or historical figures that are renowned and distinctive for their kaleidoscopic use of bright colors and bold lines. His murals can be found throughout the world, from Brazil, Russia, Switzerland, and Italy to Los Angeles, New York, and Minneapolis. For his mural of Muddy Waters in the Loop, Kobra was assisted by a team of three Brazilian visual artists and completed the work in just over two weeks. In June 2017, the mural was dedicated to the City of Chicago with a musical celebration and ceremony featuring a performance by Muddy Waters Legacy Band, which kicked off the 34th Annual Chicago Blues Festival.
