Celebrating 85 Years with 85 Acts of Kindness

What better way to celebrate 85 years of serving our members than spreading random acts of kindness throughout the communities that make us possible? Between October and November, through acts big and small, random and planned, team members easily surpassed the goal of 85 acts of kindness and logged 284 total acts throughout all the regions that SELCO serves.

Here’s a look at some of the ways we said thanks.

Saying Thanks For 85 Years

Individuals across our regions spread kindness in creative ways—here are a few individuals who participated:

  • Angela, Forest Park Assistant Branch Manager, mailed handmade greeting cards to friends.
  • Brett, Senior Graphic Designer, and his children made festive Halloween treat bags for their neighbors.
  • Sarah, Service Center Representative, surprised a friend by covering the dinner tab.
  • Colleen, Director of Marketing, visited and delivered flowers to a neighbor whose wife is in memory care.
  • Lupe, Service Center Representative, sent a coworker a beautiful handmade card thanking her for her assistance.

Amanda, Santa Clara Branch Manager, and Brett, Senior Graphic Designer, hosted a free car wash morning at Fast Track Car Wash in Eugene. (Here, a happy customer gets ready for her free car wash.)

Amanda also delivered 30 water bottles to the Springfield Education Foundation for Springfield students.

Jacob, Communications Supervisor, restocked local Little Free Libraries with some of his favorite fiction books.

The Salem Branch hosted a sixth birthday party for Eli, Liberty House’s Facility Dog.

"Eli was such a joy to have in the branch! He and his handler, Megan, were so excited to see the birthday decorations and he left holding his new stuffed llama. They were so surprised that we threw Eli a birthday party and gave us lots of fun facts and information about the skills and training Eli has had to become the facility dog he is today. We are so thankful to participate in this act of kindness!"

The Redmond Branch team was busy spreading kindness throughout their community. Among their good deeds were purchasing and donating pumpkins to KidInc. Preschool, hosting a free bagel morning at a local bakery, and coordinating a canned food donation for their food pantry.

Olivia, Community Development Specialist, coordinated a donation of socks to the Two Rivers-Dos Ríos Elementary School sock drive in Springfield.

The Human Resources and Talent Development teams passed out Café Yumm! gift cards to healthcare workers at a local hospital and delivered baked goods to the business neighbors of SELCO’s new corporate headquarters.

"Members of the Team Member Experience team picked up pastries from a local pastry shop, drove to nearby businesses in Springfield, introduced ourselves as the new neighbors, and delivered delicious sweet treats. A local business supporting another local business and delivering good cheer to other local businesses. A win all around!"

Helping Fund Teacher Projects

We also invited members to get involved in a way that speaks to SELCO’s educator roots. One-hundred branch visitors were randomly selected to receive a $25 DonorsChoose gift card, which they could use to fund a local school classroom project of their choice. Funded projects included “Exploring Diverse Perspectives” at Pilot Butte Middle School in Bend and “Flexible Seating and Math Learning” at Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School in Portland.

Some members helped fund projects especially near and dear to their hearts. As one member noted in their donation comment, “I am a retired Special Education Life Skills Teacher from Burns, OR, and am happy to credit our local SELCO Community Credit Union for providing this gift to your classroom. They want to support classroom projects and asked me to find a worthy cause. I hope it helps you achieve your goals to provide materials to stimulate your students’ creativity.”

Although the 85 Acts of Kindness initiative has ended, our community support doesn’t stop there. Visit our social media channels to see other ways we’re supporting our communities, like our SPARK! Creative Learning Grants and SELCO scholarships (we’ll begin accepting applications in January 2022).
