How Kids Can Make a Recycled Creative Windsock

Encourage kids’ art and imagination while they make this recycled creative windsock. This project also reinforces reusing and recycling otherwise discarded materials.

Recycled Creative Windsock

Here are some suggested supplies:Supplies for Windsock

  • Plastic bottle*—any size will work
  • Ribbon or fabric scraps
  • Markers or acrylic paints
  • Craft knife
  • Liquid glue
  • String or fishline for hanging
  • Hole punch (optional)
  • Double-sided tape (optional)

How to put the windsock together:

  1. Use a craft knife to cut the bottle in half. (Side note here: My granddaughter fashioned her own windsock using a 4-ounce condiment cup.)Cut Bottle in Half
  2. Cut ribbons or fabric scraps to 10″ to 12″.
  3. With the tip of the craft knife, pierce two small holes in the bottom of the bottle for the fishline or string. You can also pierce these holes with a nail held with pliers and heated in a flame.Pierce Two Small Holes in Bottom
  4. Pierce a row of holes around the open end of the bottle to thread the ribbons through. The easiest way is a hole punch, but the hot nail trick from Step 3 works. Or, make small slits with the craft knife.
  5. An alternative to the holes is to place a band of double-sided tape around the open end of the bottle. But, do any painting or surface decoration before applying the tape.Alternative Double Sided Tape
  6. Paint the inside of the bottle. Decorate the outside with markers. Go wild!!Paint Inside of Bottle
  7. When the paint is dry, add the ribbon streamers to your windsock. Thread each streamer through one of the holes and secure it in place with a dot of glue.Add Ribbon Streamers
  8. Proudly display your recycled creative windsock.
