Sounds of the Sea

  • Time: 11:30 a.m. - noon
  • Location: Hatfield Visitor Center Auditorium
  • Description: Join us for this insightful and interactive presentation on how researchers use hydrophones and bioacoustics to identify unique sounds of the sea. The audience will have a chance to test their ability to identify underwater sounds during an interactive “sounds of the sea” game. This activity is family-friendly and fun for all ages. Keynote Talk

Views from above: How Drones Help Us Monitor the Health of Whales
  • Time: 1 - 2 p.m.
  • Location: Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building, Carmen Phillips Ford Auditorium
  • Keynote Speakers: Dr. K.C. Bierlich and PhD candidate Clara Bird from the Geospatial Ecology of Marine Megafauna (GEMM) Lab in the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute
  • Description: K.C. and Clara will discuss how they use drones as a non-invasive method to study the morphology and health of baleen whales. Both speakers have extensive experience using drone technology to study Antarctic minke whales, humpback whales, and Adelie penguins. Read more.

 

Feeding time at the Visitor Center

  • Time: 2:30 - 3 p.m.
  • Location: Hatfield Visitor Center
  • Description: Watch and listen as Jaimie Hart, an Hatfield Visitor Center aquarist, feeds the animals in the nearshore tank. She will talk about how the animals in the tank, their life and behaviors.
