Hunewill’s

Doc and Als

A little History…

What we know as Doc & Al’s Resort began as Bogard’s Camp in the mid 1950’s and was owned and operated by Lucile Hunewill Bogard and her husband Jack Bogard.  It was a place where people would come to camp, fish, ride horses, or arrange for pack trips up into the Sierra.  Soon the camp expanded to include a “utility house” with restrooms, showers, and a laundry room.  At the time, there was no motorized vehicle access to Buckeye Canyon or Eagle Creek, and going horseback was the way to get up into the high country for a hunting trip or fishing adventure.

Around 1958 or 1959, Bogard’s Camp was sold to Lynn Nearpass and the name was changed to Doc & Al’s Tent Motel, and then to Doc & Al’s Resort.  Prior to their purchase of the resort, the Nearpasses had purchased a sporting goods store in the town of Bridgeport called Doc & Al’s Sporting Goods.  Owned by Doc and Alberta Slinghoff, it was located next to Ken’s Sporting Goods, which is still in operation adjacent to the courthouse in the town of Bridgeport.  With the purchase of Bogard’s Camp by the Nearpasses, it became Doc & Al’s.  If people stopped in at the sporting goods store to buy fishing gear and were looking for a place to stay, Lynn Nearpass would direct them to Doc & Al’s Resort.  Camping, riding, fishing, and guided pack trips and hunts were still a part of Doc & Al’s Resort for a number of years and were a draw to people who loved to explore the beauty of the Eastern Sierra.  Eventually, the campsites and tents were upgraded to small tent cabins and then larger solid sided cabins.  With the addition of more permanent cabins, other facilities were added for the comfort and convenience of guests.  Over the years, camp trailers were pulled in to accommodate more campers, and RV hookup sites were added near the campground.  Despite the addition of more infrastructure, the scenery and activities remained largely unchanged.  Even now, fishing, hiking, and just enjoying the area are favorite pastimes with longtime visitors and residents alike.

With the purchase of Doc & Al’s at the end of 2023, the Hunewill family’s plans are to get it running and updated so that the people who have been making memories in this beautiful location can do so once again. We look forward to seeing you all back in 2024!
