Church of St. Theresa

Address: Aušros Vartų g. 14, Vilnius 01303

Church of St. Theresa, located in the Vilnius old town, is full of curiosities. Come closer and you will probably hear ladies chattering in Lithuanian and Polish, gathered around the sculpture of the Crucified. Take a look at his legs. They seem somewhat faded, right? These are feet that have been kissed by countless faithfuls. And that is not the only curious fact often unknown to the passersby. Church of St. Theresa is the first baroque monument in Lithuania without a tower. It’s square, four-phased belfry is crowned by a weathervane- an angel with a trumpet. Not only is it incredibly cute, it is also the only such weathervane to top a Lithuanian church. Those who are interested in arts, will certainly appreciate the standout fusion of different art styles present within the church’s interior as well as the stunning main altar. On top of which rests a large cross with a wooden figure of Christ. Alright, no one would miss it, but not everyone would know, that underneath this chapel hide the graves of the Pociej family, and that it once housed the heart of Jozef Pilsudski, the leader of the Second Polish Republic who died in Warsaw. It is now buried in Rasos Cemetery, found within 1500 steps.
