The NRCQ, generously supported by ALCS, provides a fantastic opportunity for students to enjoy a book quiz with their peers and compete with other schools in their region.
The heats will run from 22 February to 25 March. 25 teams are able to sign up and compete in each regional heat.
Winning teams from each of the 22 regions will go forward to a star-studded, national final on Wednesday 5 June 2024 held in central London, where one team will be crowned National Reading Champions 2024.
Mr Dilly returns once again as our quiz master for all the heats and the final; bringing his trademark energy, warmth and enthusiasm to each event!
Please note: the majority of regional heats will take place online. However, some regions are running in-person events and you will need to plan accordingly on the day.
How to take part
- The quiz is open to schools throughout the UK
- It costs £25 per team
- Each school can enter one team or two teams
- Teams consist of four members
- Students must be aged between 10 and 14 years

The documents listed below for download contain all the information you need to know about the quiz. Please ensure you read them carefully before making your booking, even if you have taken part before.
- A comprehensive guide to the quiz including how the quiz will run, content, technical requirements
- Listings of all the regional heats with date and time (please take note of the regions running in-person events)
- Sample quiz sheets from previous years 2022, 2023 and a new set for 2024: why not use these to run some quizzes in school for fun and to help you select your team(s)?
This booklist includes the titles and authors that featured in previous years but is for guidance only and is not a definitive list of content! - A4 flyers and A3 posters: spread the word around the school to raise awareness of the quiz. Promote your participation among your wider school community with this celebratory badge
- There are lots of ways you can support your team and promote the quiz in and out of school with our social media toolkit, local MP engagement ideas, student reporter pack and local media suggestions
- Please print a certificate to celebrate your team members on the day of your regional heat. Here is an editable version that will download directly.

Please use our online booking form to secure your place in your regional heat. It is quick to do and costs only £25 per team to enter. Please double check the date and time of your regional heat and have the relevant credit card details ready for payment.
Access to the quiz is available only when payment has been made in advance in full.
- All bookings made by 31 December will receive a literacy reward for their school
- Registration for the quiz closes on 31 January but we advise booking as soon as you can as many heats sell out fast.
- After registration closes we’ll be in touch in February with more specific details about your regional heat
