Movement that wants autonomy from eastern Angola challenges PR to talk about claim

The Movement of the Portuguese Protectorate of Lunda Tchokwe (MPPLT), which claims autonomy from eastern Angola, challenges the President to address, in his speech on the State of the Nation, the "peaceful struggle to claim autonomy" of the region.

The President, João Lourenço, speaks this Thursday about the State of the Nation marking the opening of the parliamentary year 2020-2021.

In a press release sent to Lusa, the MPPLT states that the autonomy of that region, which includes the provinces of Moxico, Lunda Sul and Lunda Norte, "is a divine and legitimate historical right of the Tchokwe people that the President should not ignore in his speech.

The MPPLT, which reaffirms that it is a protectorate and not a former Portuguese colony, recalls that one of the PR's promises was to "listen to all sensitivities," but what we are seeing, it stresses, "are closed doors around you.

The communiqué reads: "Inviabilizing the debate on the issue, there is no room for dialogue and consultation at a time when the demand is still peaceful".

For this movement that defends the autonomy of eastern Angola, the time has come for the President of MPLA and Angola to tell the world and Angolans the historical truth of Lunda territory.

"The time of truth has come when the President should speak to the people (...) if we don't resolve, don't dialogue with Lunda, we are opening a breach of a peaceful conflict for the violent one", he says.

The National Assembly is "the stage where the President should not forget the issue of Lunda when speaking on the issues of peace and security or political stability.

According to the MPPLT, it is necessary for the President to speak publicly about the Lunda Tchokwe issue and propose ways to resolve this controversy.

"We are prepared to dialogue with the MPLA government at any time," they assure.

In the final part of the communiqué, the movement also considers that João Lourenço "should not ignore for a long time the dialogue to maintain the current situation".

Because, he notes, the Lunda Tchokwe people "will be forced and forced" to "announce and proclaim unilaterally" the "Independent Government of Lunda Tchokwe, created that the human, psychological and material conditions are in place for this purpose.

The provinces of Lunda Sul and Lunda Norte, both in eastern Angola, are the largest diamond producers.

On Saturday, the President of the Republic goes to Lunda Sul province for a working visit.

On his Facebook page, the MPPLT states that João Lourenço will meet with the Sobas (traditional authorities) of Lunda Tchokwe "to pressure them to give up the idea of an Autonomous State a legitimate right.

Besides the MPPLT, the Liberation Forces of the Enclave of Cabinda - Armed Forces of Cabinda (FLEC-FAC), north of Angola, demand autonomy
