The Greater Philadelphia Craft Beer Trail

See why the Philadelphia region is one of the best places for beer in the world...

SHARE

While he may never have actually said “God made beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy,” the sentiment commonly attributed to Benjamin Franklin remains true, particularly in his beloved home of Philadelphia. The city is one of the nation’s leading craft beer capitals and sits at the forefront of the American craft brewing renaissance.

Philadelphia has earned a plethora of craft beer-related accolades, including honors as one of the best American beer cities by national publications like GQ, USA Today, CNN and Thrillist, and as home to Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine’s best beer bar in the world. A handful of the region’s breweries and beer professionals have reached the rank of semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation Awards, and its brewers frequently rack up hardware at craft beer’s biggest gatherings, including the yearly Great American Beer Festival (51 medals – 13 of them gold — for Philly-area breweries since 2010) and the biannual World Beer Cup (nearly two-dozen Philly medals over the last four competitions).

An imposing roster of formidable beer artisans operate a staggering 116 breweries (across more than 165 locations) throughout Philadelphia and the Countryside, a lineup which includes some of the most coveted and celebrated in the United States — from Yards Brewing and Sly Fox to Dock Street and Victory Brewing — as well as a stellar collection of micro and nanobreweries, neighborhood brewhouses, experimental specialty shops and everything in between. All together, the region’s brew scene Philadelphia one of the country’s craft beer tourism hotspots, a must-experience destination for locals and visitors alike.

Grab a glass and map out your own visit to the best craft breweries in the city of Philadelphia and the surrounding region (Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties) with our comprehensive guide, which is sortable alphabetically, geographically and by rating on Untappd, the popular nearly 10-million-user social app which allows craft beer drinkers to review and share thoughts on beers they’re drinking and the breweries that produce them.

Overview

Philadelphia breweries range widely in size and scope. There are the pioneering names, like Dock Street, Philadelphia Brewing Co., Sly Fox, Victory and Yards, responsible for sparking the local craft beer renaissance and creating some of Philadelphia’s best-known, and most accessible, craft recipes.

Newer additions like Human Robot, Levante, La Cabra and Brewery ARS have steadily expanded into multiple locations, developing wider brand recognition and distribution throughout the region. The tide on independent full-service brewpubs is rising fast, too, as stalwarts are joined by distinctive standalones (Crime & Punishment, Second District) as well as locally based chains (Conshohocken, Iron Hill).

Innovation and originality are another major hallmark of the Philadelphia scene, with breweries like Fermentery Form, Imprint, Free Will and Forest & Main often garnering international buzz by focusing on esoteric, hard-to-find or altogether new varieties, styles and techniques like fruited sours and milkshake IPAs. Pennsylvania breweries based outside the immediate region, such as Liquid Art and Separatist, and even breweries from further afield, like Other Half and Source, have made an effort to make their presence permanently known in the city with Philadelphia outposts.

All this action is bolstered by a lineup of still-in-the-works concepts, a promising sign that beer here will continue its boom, even in the face of immense challenges rooted in the pandemic.

Beer Tours and Philly Beer Week

Many of the breweries in the five-county region have tours and/or tastings at their facilities, and a number of local groups — including City Brew ToursLiberty Brew Tours and Viator — offer comprehensive experiences that include multiple breweries across the breadth of Philadelphia’s deep, dynamic beer scene.

Taking place every June, the 10-day Philly Beer Week is the largest beverage celebration of its kind in America, drawing breweries and visitors from around the country and world.

Philadelphia Beer History

Philadelphians have embraced beer and beer culture since the very beginning of our nation. After all, this is the birthplace of America, and great ideas have been known to hatch over a pint. Case in point: Local taverns served as vital meeting points during the American Revolution, providing the well-stocked gathering spaces required by Founding Fathers and common colonists alike to birth modern democracy.

Philadelphia would also play a crucial role in the wider maturation of American beercraft. In the mid-19th through the early-20th centuries, more than 90 breweries operated in Philadelphia proper, and another 100 operated in the surrounding areas, making it one of the region’s most stable and essential industries.

The brewery uptick came to an end in 1920, when Prohibition brought on the near-demise of virtually all of Philadelphia’s beer producers, the majority of which remained shuttered beyond the repeal of the “Noble Experiment” in 1933. But the enterprising, independent spirit of the originators never left the fabric of Philadelphia’s civic identity, setting the scene for a serious comeback that began gaining steam in the early 1980s.

Throughout the next 20-plus years, innovative craft breweries proudly reclaimed the region’s reputation by brewing some of the country’s best beer.

2SP Brewing Company

The pride of Delaware County, 2SP Brewing Company has some serious (beer) muscles bolstering its operation, including partner-brewmaster Bob Barrar, who guided Iron Hill’s Media location to dozens of national awards before striking out in 2015. It didn’t take long for Barrar and company to continue racking up hardware — The Russian imperial stout has won three Great American Beer Festival gold medals — on a 20-bbl system in Aston. The tucked-away facility is accompanied by a spic-and-span public tasting room pouring more than 20 of their beers like their signature Delco Lager, special releases, and creative small batches aged in wine and whiskey casks. In 2022, 2SP opened a tap house location in Chadds Ford, offering a dog-friendly outdoor patio, a dozen taps, and a menu of fun bar bites like smash burgers, spent grain biscuits and baked pretzels.

Bitchin’ Kitten Brewery

Long-time beer aficionado Michael Crosson began by experimenting with homebrewing in his small apartment kitchen, creating his first concoction named “Bitchin’ Kitten,” after his wife Brigitte’s cat Shadow who once accidentally mistook a White Russian for milk (and did not enjoy the experience). In 2019, Michael entered his brew into a homebrew competition and walked away with a silver medal, a success that was the impetus to open the feline-themed Bitchin’ Kitten Brewery in 2021 in Morrisville, Bucks County. Every quarter, the couple donate a portion of their proceeds to a different cat rescue operation and feature the organization on a beer label. Crime and Punishment Brewing Co.

The first 21st-century brewery to open in the aptly named Brewerytown neighborhood, Crime and Punishment Brewing Co. leans into its Russian personality and decor — to be expected when a place is named after a Dostoyevsky novel. That said, this 50-seat, seven-barrel operation, open since 2015, is strictly Philly in spirit. Brewer-partners Michael Paul and Michael Wambolt balance approachability and edginess, looking to the season to inspire the six to eight beers they offer at any time. While year-rounders like Space Race, a complex but drinkable IPA, are typically on, drinkers might also run into an inky oatmeal stout, tasty cranbeer or gose brewed with kombu, depending on the day. The spot is open for both indoor and outdoor drinking and dining for, as they say, “great beer, great food and great community.”

Some refer to Dock Street Brewery as the O.G. Philly brewery, and they’re not exaggerating. When the original location opened in 1989, it became the very first craft brewery to open in Philadelphia since Prohibition. While the brewery has changed locations a number of times, Rosemarie Certo’s influential brewery continues on at Dock Street South. Opened in 2019, this location brings a 20-barrel, 10,000-square-foot brewhouse and taproom to South Philly, with 12 beer taps and creative cocktails complementing signature pizzas and brasserie-style eats. South hosts weekly quizzo, live music, regular pop-up markets and more. Every Saturday, the brewery offers $10-per-ticket tours into the behind-the-scenes operation, with beer samples and a take-home pint glass. April 2023 saw the opening of the long-awaited Dock Street Fishtown taproom on Front Street, a new all-electric taproom featuring eight beer lines (plus four for cider and wine) behind the concrete-topped bar and kitchen serving Mediterranean small plates (try the house-made wood-fired pita), again expanding the iconic brand back to multiple locations.

East Branch Brewing Company

Homebrewer Dylan Meanix and Victory Brewing alum Kevin McGovern introduced their second-floor East Branch Brewing Company to Downingtown in 2017 with the goal of celebrating and elevating venerated beer styles. Less concerned with trendiness than quality, the pair populates its drafts with picks like Der Bach, a classic German Kölsch, and their Alluvium IPA. They separate themselves with an ambitious kitchen as well, serving USDA Prime Angus burgers, a brisket bánh mì and noodle bowls, with vegan options, too.

Fermentery Form

A pet project of three longtime friends that blossomed into a full-on West Kensington operation, Fermentery Form doesn’t actually brew on-site. Instead, unfermented beer is created elsewhere and brought in to ferment, blend and age … ergo, fermentery. The results are crisp, refreshing beers executed in the style of Belgian lambics and French farmhouse ales that have garnered a cult following among the city beer cognoscenti. But before you head into this back-alley beer spot (which offers three to four drafts and a selection of 750mL bottles), check if the green light outside is illuminated — that indicates the ’by announcement only” speakeasy is open. (Alternative option: Just check their social media.) The prohibition-era theatrics are worth the fun for the Belgian-style mixed fermentation and sour beers this team produces.

Forest & Main Brewing Company

When Daniel Endicott and Gerard Olson first opened Forest & Main Brewing Company in 2012, they wanted an opportunity to embody that small town, front porch, idyllic feel. “We believe in simplicity, and letting the yeast shine brightest,” says Endicott, who prefers to brew balanced, lower-ABV styles of Belgian and British origin, including darks and bitters poured on cask. Having outgrown their original 19th-century Victorian facility, the Forest & Main team moved on and up to not one, but two new locations in November of 2022. Their relocated Production Facility brewery unwrapped just a couple blocks away on North Main Street, while a standalone brewpub opened its doors on busy East Butler Avenue inside a former skate shop with a dozen taps (three of which are side-pull), three cask beer hand pumps and room for 50.

Ask Great Barn Brewery founders Steve and Maryana Ferguson what it means to truly drink local and they will tell you all about their farm-crafted beers made from ingredients they grow themselves next door to their Ukrainian-owned brewery in the northernmost point of Bucks County. This farm-to-glass experience is only possible thanks to the grain cultivated on their 177-acre Kintnersville farmstead, having converted the eponymous barn into a wind-powered seven-bbl brewhouse where they turn their own locally malted barley and spring water from the grounds into brews like Where the Delaware Am I? and Hazy Acres IPAs sold right there on the farm as well as at their other locations. Those include Great Barn’s New Hope Taproom, a cozy gathering place with 16 taps along Aquetong Creek, and the Warrington Taphouse, offering an impressive 30 taps, televisions for game days, a live music stage and a large patio inside the upscale Shops at Valley Square.

Human Robot Brewery

Does combining experimental nouveau beers, fascinatingly poured traditional drafts and award-winning sandwiches compute? That’s a question the flesh-and-blood folks at Human Robot Brewery aim to answer at their Kensington brewpub. Among the flavorful offerings are half-a-dozen varieties of beers on standard draft, plus a selection of German and Czech lagers and ales offered as tank pours and or as one of three “traditional” hladinka, šnyt and miklo pour styles, or as a unique Czech-inspired Milktube, a stange glass filled from the Lukr faucet with dense Polotmavy foam meant to be chugged. If all that makes you hungry, too, you’re in luck — Poe’s Sandwich Joint, formerly a popular Fishtown takeout shop with a cult following, now operates right inside the brewery, offering some of the best sandwiches in the city. In March 2022, the brewery expanded in Jenkintown, Montco, with a 140-seat brewpub, dubbed The Haus, serving 14 draft brews (including the Milktube) and a German beer hall-inspired food menu.

J.J. Ratigan Brewing Company

The folks behind Pottstown’s J.J. Ratigan Brewing Company aren’t afraid to embrace the past. Located in the town’s historic 19th-century Ellis Mills department store building (complete with exposed brick walls and original wood floors), the brewery is named after a real pre-Prohibition Philadelphia brewer (and co-owner Dan Glennon’s great-great-uncle) who helped lead Philly’s anti-temperance resistance. But the old easily melds with the new at the 15-barrel brewery, which offers both crowd-pleasing takes on classic beer styles and trendier, seasonal brews. J.J. Ratigan is also a full-service restaurant, the largest eatery in Montco’s second-largest city, offering a scratch menu inspired by beer gardens around the world, plus craft cocktails, whiskies and local wines.

Brewery founder Mike Meyers (neither the actor nor the masked character) purchased a dilapidated 1880s carriage house in Fishtown, and rehabbed it to expose old brick and ceiling beams — while replacing and building everything else inside — to create the modern farmhouse design for his Meyers Brewing Company. The front of the carriage house boasts an operational 13-foot glass garage door with an aim “to provide a unique and chill atmosphere to enjoy beers,” according to the founder. The original Montco location offers a divey but friendly feel, often packed for football games and quizzo with a rotating selection of food trucks. Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company

Croydon’s Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company (NCBC) has racked up numerous awards since opening in 2012, including a 2022 World Beer Cup gold for their Warehouse Lager, three Great American Beer Festival medals honoring its Croydon Is Burning traditional German-style Rauchbier and two GABF honors for their Bavarian-style Churchville Lager unfiltered wheat ale. The brewery offers rotating taps of 15 to 25 beers (brewed with Neshaminy Creek water) in its flagship brewpub and its lively beer garden. Kris and Brian Wilson left careers in medicine and tech to convert Quakertown’s nearly century-old Palace Theatre into The Proper Brewing Company (TPBC) in 2015 as part of the Quakertown Revitalization Project. Inside, exposed brick, plaster molding and some original seating preserved from the building’s past life as a vaudeville house commingle with contemporary touches like flat-screens and a sleek industrial draft tower whose jet-black finish matches the 22-seat bar. This system pours a lineup of a dozen in-house creations at any time, backed by local draft wines and ciders. Easygoing flagships include the Blondie Bree blonde ale and Belgian-influenced Gabi Wit, joined on tap by rotating IPAs, bourbon stouts, sours from their “Pucker Up” series and more. Thoughtful pub fare populates the menu, where wings, salads and sandwiches rule, with beef locally sourced from nearby Windy Springs Farm, which also receives TPBC’s spent brewing grain to use as feed.

The brewery sits inside a 70-capacity dining area also serving cocktails as well as pub food and pizza from their kitchen, along with weekly quizzo and live music.

Triple Bottom Brewing Co.

Beer and social justice go hand in hand at Triple Bottom Brewing Co., the first brewery in Pennsylvania to earn Certified B Corporation status (classifying it as a business meeting “high standards” in performance, accountability and transparency). As part of its mission to create a “fair chance” brewery, the Callowhill destination prides itself on creating meaningful, living-wage jobs for employees with diverse perspectives and skills who have been incarcerated, experienced homelessness or have otherwise been left behind. The self-described “brewery with a mission” also walks the green walk with electricity pulled entirely from wind power and trash diverted away from landfills. That mission extends to creating well-crafted brews — dozen-or-so beers including lagers, IPAs and a number of special releases  — served in a homey, comfortable atmosphere alongside a DiBruno Brothers-partnered menu.

Troubles End Brewing

With a laid-back and chill vibe, Troubles End Brewing is aptly -named. Brought to life in 2020 by three guys behind Philly’s well-known Pistola’s restaurants and former Forest & Main lead brewer Zach Svoboda, the family-friendly seven-bbl Collegeville brewery offers an extensive 25 taps of pale ales, stouts and several saisons, a side-pull draught and plenty of guest slots, plus zero-proof cocktails and wine on tap. The industrial-style tasting room, adorned with reclaimed wood and steel walls, offers views of the exposed brew system and a large stage for live music. Equal parts restaurant and brewery, the wide-ranging American menu lists over 30 items, including brunch favorites and plenty of vegan and vegetarian offerings.

Twisted Gingers Brewing Company

Brewer Mark Mayer — who notably does have red hair — opened neighborhood brewery-taproom Twisted Gingers Brewing Company in a 100-year-old tavern space in the Manayunk-Roxborough area in 2019, serving eight drafts complemented by a selection of scratch pizzas made with a special beer-infused “brewhouse dough.” Staples at the brewery (which features a 34-foot beer can mural at its entrance) include Mayer Light, an easy-drinking blonde ale the brewer concocted to wean his father off macro-label light beers, and The Farmhouse saison, based on the ales served in this same location a century ago. The brewery also offers a kiosk at the Flourtown Farmers Market in Montco.

Slinging pints and pizzas since 2017, Urban Village Brewing Company is the handiwork of Dave Goldman and Tom Revelli who united their passions for brewing and baking to build a cheesy and fermentable paradise in Northern Liberties. Goldman creates boldly flavored beers with an open mind and a creative streak from flagships like the popular Super Villain IPA and Experiment 6.0 light lager to barrel-aged seasonals. Executive chef Chris Davis’ white subway-tiled kitchen is built around scratch cooking, specializing in brick oven pizza, with dough gently leavened from a natural sourdough starter, available in up to 14 varieties.

The 35-seat tasting room (a former Texaco) serves a variety of brews from their eight taps including rotating selections of New England and West Coast IPAs, ESBs, kölschs, lagers and takes on other British styles plus a nitro tap for Irish stouts and more.

Vault Brewing Company

Housed in the circa-1889 Yardley National Bank, Vault Brewing Company’s allure comes as much from its speakeasy-in-a-bank-esque design — wrought-iron caging, safety deposit boxes, the original four-ton vault door that opens into the cellar — as its beer. On offer: 10 selections on tap, including session-friendly IPAs, pilsners, wits and a sweet potato ale, along with a kitchen serving a hearty menu of small plates, sandwiches and seven gourmet pizzas straight from their wood-burning oven. And just a five-minute walk south is the brewery’s Vault Smoke House barbecue restaurant and taproom, a full-service satellite location in the Tannery office park, with nine taps and plenty of brisket, smoked sausage, pulled pork and ribs served with Memphis, Alabama and both North and South Carolina-style sauces.

Victory, one of Philly’s most-impactful brands, distributes nationwide and operates multiple locations across the region including spacious Chester County brewhouse restaurants in Kennett Square, Downingtown and Parkesburg; the vast indoor-outdoor Victory Beer Hall at XFINITY Live! in the heart of the South Philly Sports Complex; and an expansive 14,000-square-foot brewery and taproom at 1776 Ben Franklin Parkway in Center City. VK Brewing Co. & Eatery

Originally planned for Glen Mills, veteran-owned VK Brewing Co. & Eatery shifted gears last minute, opening inside the beautiful and historic circa-1796 Ship Inn building in Exton in late 2022. The brewery opened serving from ten taps including their now-flagship Grand Opening West Coast IPA and Haunted Haze hazy IPA. While the ten-bbl brewery sits next-door in a former horse stable, the taproom and restaurant occupy the first floor of the 18th century stone edifice once patronized by George Washington, Andrew Jackson and even Jackie Kennedy. The restaurant offers burgers, pasta dishes and stone-baked pizzas, along with a (coming soon) raw bar as well as an outdoor patio that seats 40.

von C Brewing Co.

The von Czoernig family team at von C Brewing Co. can claim some serious brewing cred as sixth-generation brewers descended from third-great-grandfather Christian Schmidt who first brought lager yeast to Philly from Germany in the 19th century and founded the iconic Christian Schmidt Brewing Company in Northern Liberties in 1860. Each successive generation produced master brewers, culminating in the opening of the 20-barrel, 16,000 square foot von C microbrewery tasting room and beer garden in Norristown, voted “Best New Brewery in PA” in 2021 by Breweries in PA readers. The brewery offers 19 taps serving up stouts, pilsners, sours and lagers including the original Pils Legendary Philly Lager, a “very pale” American lager based on their family’s 160 year old recipe.

Situated among the rolling hills of Bucks County, Warwick Farm Brewing — owned by two fathers and their sons — is literally going back to its roots. Located on a historic 22-acre farm atop the highest point in Jamison, the farm-to-glass microbrewery and brew farm grows many of its beers’ own ingredients on-site. These ultra-fresh beers are then served just steps away, in either the new 5,000-square-foot tasting and taproom with 24 draft lines, the fireside seating area, the refurbished 1,500-square-foot wraparound deck, or the expansive biergarten and 18-foot beer trailer with its own draft tap lines, all overlooking newly planted hop fields and the Little Neshaminy Valley. The brewery serves up traditional to experimental styles, and plans to expand its ingredients and its space with an orchard and a sour cellar, among other additions.

The Ways Restaurant & Brewery

Siblings Tim and Steven Way, proudly describing themselves as “two red-headed brothers from Jenkintown,” turned their shared passion for craft beer into a family business, opening The Ways Restaurant & Brewery in neighboring Glenside across from the town’s SEPTA regional rail station in 2019. The 75-seat brewpub taps into the talents of both Ways brothers, with Tim, a veteran of well-known Weyerbacher Brewing in Easton, covering plenty of stylistic ground on his taut brewhouse setup featuring his Tim’s Home Team Brews stocked full of IPAs, stouts and pales, while chef Steven offers up clever pub fare and salads in addition to the signature corn tortilla creations served from his award-winning Smokin’ Tacos food truck.

Well Crafted Beer Company

In 2018, a quintet of college friends banded together to open Well Crafted Beer Company, a versatile brewpub located in a century-old Lansdale building that once housed a Masonic temple. The massive 5,000-square-foot space is evenly split between a brewhouse and modern-industrial restaurant-taproom, offering a 20-tap bar, a bottle shop and a stage for live entertainment. Brewer Rick Solomon and his team have made more than 180 recipes on their seven-barrel system, including flagship beers Nitro Blonde Americano ale with lactose and coffee conditioned on single-origin coffee from Lansdale’s Backyard Beans, Mother Of Perle kölsch and the fruity, fragrant Hop Monger IPA. The brewery recently expanded to a second location eight miles south at Ambler Yards, serving 13 craft brews on tap along with a regular rotation of food trucks.

Residents of King of Prussia were long an underserved local beer enclave until the opening of Workhorse Brewing Company, the brainchild of co-founder Dan Hershberg, a marketing and business veteran of such diverse stops as ESPN, the Phillies and his own popular Northern Liberties’ Philly Phaithful sports T-shirt shop. In 2016, Hershberg — with zero prior beer experience outside of personal consumption — launched his Workhorse brand to quick and universal acclaim. Within two years, Hershberg, alongside president and head brewer Nate Olewine (formerly of Devils Backbone and Victory Brewing), opened Workhorse’s mammoth KOP 30-bbl Rolec production brewhouse and tasting room. The pair will both tell you their M.O. is rooted in approachability, offering well-made beers that are simply enjoyable to drink and don’t demand any esoteric graduate-level sensory analysis. The result: a line of signature ales and lagers like the Queen of Prussia and Line of Succession session IPAs, as well as limited seasonal beers.

As the driving force behind one of Philly’s most popular beer brands, Yards Brewing Company president Tom Kehoe (along with co-founder and still-occasional collaborator Jon Bovit) helped ignite the craft beer revolution in Philadelphia, momentum he’s sustained through considerable humanitarian efforts as well as unwavering standards for his brews. Established in a small garage in 1994 — starting with its still-on-tap ESA extra special ale — Yards Brewing’s profile skyrocketed over the next three decades, expanding its headquarters location five times through Manayunk, Roxborough and Kensington before settling into its current 70,000-square-foot site in Northern Liberties in 2018. Powered by green wind energy, the brewery, taproom, restaurant and beer garden pours from 25 rotating taps including classics like Philadelphia Pale Ale, Philthy hazy IPA, Love Stout nitro and Brawler English Mild alongside “first draft” new beers. The brewery’s motto of “Brew Unto Others” is reflected in its commitment to quality in its beers and to the greater community and a pledge for long-term sustainability. If you’re on your way out of town (or into), enjoy a flight before your flight at their airport outpost by the American Airlines Admirals Club in Philadelphia International Airport’s Terminal A-East.
