Sonoma County has long been a pioneer in sustainability and climate action, from a landmark climate resolution to the innovative formation of a Regional Climate Protection Authority, to the groundbreaking ban on new gas stations and fossil fuel infrastructure, to its extraordinary production of clean energy, Sonoma County is an indisputable leader in the development and adoption of initiatives for a healthier planet.

First in the Nation to Unite in Acknowledging the Climate Emergency

Sonoma County was the first county in the U.S. in which all its cities (plus the County itself) passed a Climate Emergency Resolution.

First in the Nation to Ban New Gas Station Development

Sonoma County’s second largest city, Petaluma, was first in the nation to ban the development of new gas stations. The Sonoma County cities of Rohnert Park, Sebastopol, Cotati, Santa Rosa, and the town of Windsor, along with all unincorporated areas of the county, have since enacted their own bans. Santa Rosa currently stands as the largest city in the U.S. to prohibit new gas stations and related fossil fuel infrastructure.

 

Sonoma County Clean Power BuildingProduction of Locally Produced 100% Renewable Power

Sonoma Clean Power is currently the only utility in the State of California to offer its customers the option of 100% renewable, locally produced, solar and geothermal energy for homes and businesses through its EverGreen program – effectively eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions from electricity use. This is made possible in part by our Geysers, which represent the largest geothermal field in the world, and Sonoma Clean Power’s floating solar project (among the largest in the U.S.).

Sonoma County is not only celebrated for producing some of the finest wines in the world, but also some of the most sustainably produced. 99% of the vineyard acreage in Sonoma County has been certified sustainable by a third-party program. Sonoma County Winegrowers releases annual reports with updates regarding its sustainability initiatives and its ongoing efforts to be innovators in this realm.

 

Regional Climate Protection Authority LogoTaking Action for Carbon Neutrality by 2030

Sonoma County’s Five-Year Strategic Plan outlines its plans for reaching carbon neutrality by 2030 – fifteen years ahead of the statewide goal, and well ahead of the timeline set by the Paris Agreement. Sonoma County currently represents the only county in the U.S. to create a Regional Climate Protection Authority to coordinate and support climate action countywide.

 

Sonoma County Transit’s bus fleet is electrically poweredShift to Zero-Emission Transit Fleet

Approximately 40% of Sonoma County Transit’s bus fleet is electrically powered. The county intends to spend more than $50 million to replace its remaining coaches in the coming years. Sonoma County Transit deployed its first all-electric bus in 2018.
