Giveon Drops "Take Time," Mellow Music About Love and Turmoil

It's about the "three stages of a love story: infatuation, turmoil, and heartbreak."

Mellow music is always in high demand and Giveon is keenly aware of this. The Long Beach-bred singer releases his debut EP Take Time today with the intention of showcasing his calming, baritone vocals but also storytelling.

"What I want people to take away from this project is relatability," the singer tells Teen Vogue. "Each song on the project is based on a true story. Most of them are me looking back at past situations, but a few are inspired by what my friends went through."

Drake fans may recognize Giveon's voice from "Chicago Freestyle," a smooth tempo song about love lost in the Windy City. "Being apart of something with Drake is surreal. Especially when you’re my age considering the fact that I grew up on his music," Giveon admits. "It’s an experience that will never actually sink in."

But the 25-year-old has also opened for Snoh Aalegra and worked with Sevn Thomas — producer for Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Travis Scott — on his new music. Moody, sonically interesting songs like "Garden Kisses" and "Fields" are what listeners can expect more of on Take Time — with subtle messaging about a relationship.

"My favorite quotes from the project are 'Sometimes I wish you knew..' and 'saying things you don’t mean to the one that means the world to you.' I’m very fond of lines that are simple, but powerful at the same time," Giveon says about the lyrics on the eight-track project. "There’s a lot of inspiration behind Take Time since I’ve been working on it for a very long time, but the main thing is the three stages of a love story: infatuation, turmoil, and heartbreak."
