Pomerantz named 2020 chair of Psychonomic Society

James Pomerantz, a professor of psychological sciences at Rice University, has been elected the 2020 chair of the Psychonomic Society Governing Board.

The Psychonomic Society is recognized by the international community of cognitive psychologists as the primary academic organization for the experimental study of cognition. The society includes more than 4,100 scientists, and its mission is to foster the science of cognition through the advancement and communication of basic research in experimental psychology and allied sciences.

“It’s an honor and privilege to serve on the Governing Board of the Psychonomic Society,” Pomerantz said in a statement released by the organization. “In becoming its chair, I am fortunate to follow a distinguished line of cognitive psychologists dating back to 1960. The first publication of my career was in a Psychonomics journal, and the society has been my go-to professional organization ever since.”

Many members of the Psychonomic Society are concerned with the application of psychology to health, technology and education and studying the fundamental properties of how the mind works. Members conduct research on questions concerning memory, learning, problem-solving, decision-making, language, attention and perception and connect their findings with research in biology, chemistry, statistics, computer science, medicine, law and business. The society publishes seven peer-reviewed journals and hosts events around the world.
