SUMMARY
The Helmut Ajango House
825 East Street, Fort Atkinson, Jefferson County
Architect: Helmut Ajango
Date of Construction: 1960; 1977-78

The Helmut Ajango House is a distinctive building based on the design aesthetic of architect Helmut Ajango. It represents the architect’s experimentation with residential design at the height of his dynamic career. Beginning with a vernacular two-story cube house from around 1900 that Ajango moved to this location in 1959, Ajango completed at least two distinctive remodeling efforts that transformed the house into works of contemporary architecture. The final remodeling effort, completed in 1977-78, gave the house most of its current appearance, a fine contemporary and/or Wrightian design with elements that represent Ajango’s interpretation of these modern architectural movements.

Though influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright’s mid-twentieth century designs, Ajango was no carbon copy of Wright. He took Wright’s emphasis on “organic” design and horizontal and geometric forms and transformed them into his own distinctive works. In this house, Ajango was able to experiment on new forms that advanced his interpretation of organic architecture. Ajango was noted in the area for his unusual contemporary designs of houses, churches, and commercial buildings. His work in the mid-to late twentieth century makes him a master architect in modern design in Wisconsin. It is a private home and is not open to the public.
