“In upholding two Arizona anti-voting laws, the US Supreme Court today effectively gutted the Voting Rights Act.

“For decades, voter suppression has disenfranchised millions of people, in particular Black and Brown communities, from exercising the fundamental right to vote. This year alone, 17 states have enacted 28 new laws that restrict access to the vote even further. Today’s decision sends a clear message that our vote is in greater peril than ever before.

“There is no question that our democracy is at a tipping point and that both the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4)  and the For the People Act (S.1) are our best chance to safeguard our democracy. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would stop future racist anti-voter legislation, but not the hundreds of bills Republicans are currently jamming through state legislatures across the country. Only the For the People Act can undo the anti-voter laws that have already passed.

“A healthy democracy is a precondition for a healthy environment. When everyone’s vote counts and when everyone’s constitutionally guaranteed right to peacefully protest is protected, our government becomes more accountable and capable of meeting the urgent demand for racial justice and enacting solutions to the rapidly accelerating climate crisis.”
