With the climate crisis at the forefront of everyone’s mind, FirstBank puts “banking for good” to action with its many environmental initiatives. Here are eight ways FirstBank has strived to foster sustainability and help preserve our planet.

Planting Trees

In 2022 and 2021, FirstBank partnered with global reforestation nonprofit, One Tree Planted, to plant a total of 100,000 trees across Colorado, Arizona, and California. Thousands of customers stepped up to save money and the planet by helping plant 5 trees for each Bloom Package opened. So why plant trees? It’s one of the most effective ways to improve air quality, protect wildlife, and conserve and filter water.

Using Recovered Ocean Bound Plastic  

FirstBank is introducing Recovered Ocean Bound Plastic Visa Debit cards to help reduce ocean waste. Due to the lack of waste management systems, most plastic in coastal regions ends up in the ocean. Recovered ocean-bound plastic is sourced from the sea, sent to recycling facilities, and repurposed into new products like outdoor seating or shampoo bottles. So while this slight change may go unnoticed in your day-to-day life, it’s positively impacting our environment.

Introducing Ozone Alert Days 

With ground-level ozone pollution impacting the health of all Coloradans, FirstBank introduced Ozone Alert Days for headquartered employees. Ozone Alert Days encourage employees to Work From Home on poor air quality days. Reducing the number of cars on the road during heavy traffic times helps to reduce emissions and protects groups who may be sensitive to poor air quality.

Remaining Energy Efficient

FirstBank’s headquarters is LEED certified and all our branches are retrofitted with energy efficient equipment, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water usage.

Partnering with C-PACE

Similarly, FirstBank provides 100% financing to businesses on energy-efficient improvements for new and existing commercial buildings through its partnership with C-PACE (Colorado Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy). This program enables building owners to modernize building energy infrastructure leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and increased renewable energy deployment.  

Integrating State-Of-The-Art Technology

FirstBank invests in state-of-the-art technology for its employees and customers to increase digital banking options that substantially reduce paper usage. As a result, the company has greatly reduced the need for in-person meetings or paper-heavy transactions.

Offering Virtual Work From Home Options

With everchanging workplace trends, FirstBank has remained flexible with increased virtual work-from-home options for centralized employees. This effort helps reduce carbon footprint, the consumption of fossil fuels, the use of printed documents and plastic (disposable cups or utensils) in the office, and energy consumption.

Providing Community Involvement Opportunities

With over 2,700 employees, FirstBank has allocated Volunteer Time Off to support community involvement. Each team member has access to two days of volunteer hours annually to help nonprofit and charitable causes. In comparison, there are hundreds of nonprofits to choose from, many of which relate to habitat conservation, wildlife preservation, and biodiversity protection.
