About Rikki Cannioto

Biography:

As a population scientist and cancer epidemiologist, Dr. Cannioto investigates the associations of modifiable lifestyle factors with cancer etiology and prognosis. Prior to pursuing a research career in cancer epidemiology, Dr. Cannioto had a 15-year career in exercise science. Her research focuses on understanding the roles of recreational physical activity, exercise, and body composition in cancer survival and in identifying immune-related factors mediating these associations.

Dr. Cannioto is currently leading a study designed to examine how changes in body composition throughout primary adjuvant chemotherapy associates with epithelial ovarian cancer survival; this project was funded by the Roswell Park Ovarian SPORE as part of a Career Enhancement Program grant. She is also co-leading a randomized control pilot study designed to investigate the effects of exercise on reducing adrenergic stress and immunosuppression in breast cancer survivors; this study was funded by the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation. Dr. Cannioto has authored several papers demonstrating that patients who exercise regularly have significantly improved survival. Her long-term research goals will be to improve cancer patients’ lives through the wide-spread promotion of physical activity and exercise ancillary to current cancer therapies.
