In Angola’s southern province of Huila lies the Gambos municipality, the home of Tunda and Chimbolela, the customary grazing commons for the region’s pastoralists. Since the end of the civil war in 2002, the authorities have been diverting communal grazing land of Tunda dos Gambos and Vale de Chimbolela for commercial farming. The rise of commercial cattle ranches on this traditional grazing land has eroded economic, social, and cultural resilience, most notably food security, among the Vanyaneka and Ovaherero people in the Gambos, Angola.
