MOZART  Overture to The Marriage of Figaro

By age 30, Mozart had achieved fame in Vienna. He began work on his second opera for Emperor Joseph II based on a popular but controversial play, The Marriage of Figaro, where the servants upend aristocrats. This project marked Mozart’s first collaboration with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. When the opera became unexpectedly popular in Prague, Mozart visited, reporting, “Nothing is played, sung, or whistled but Figaro.”

MOZART  Sinfonia concertante in E-flat Major, K. 364

Mozart, at age 23, began to feel the first strains of dissatisfaction with his circumstances in his hometown of Salzburg. He was unhappy with his employment situation and craved independence both personally and artistically. For a change of scene, he embarked on a short tour to Mannheim and Paris, where he encountered new performance styles that informed the type of music he produced when he returned home, including the Sinfonia concertante.

MOZART  Symphony No. 35 in D Major, K. 385, “Haffner”

In 1782, Mozart was 26 and freshly independent, living in Vienna as a freelancer. Though swamped with other obligations, he carved out time to honor his father’s request to fulfill a commission for an old friend, Sigmund Haffner, who was soon to be elevated to the nobility. It was later adapted as the Symphony No. 35.
