Orchestra of St. Luke’s

Handel’s Royal Fireworks
Thursday, April 13, 2023 8 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Bernard Labadie by Winnie Au
Bernard Labadie, one of today’s most prominent Baroque-era interpreters, leads a particularly regal all-Handel program with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and the outstanding La Chapelle de Québec with soloists. Handel’s quintessential Coronation Anthems composed for King George II are to this day the standard-bearers of this celebratory tradition. His popular Music for the Royal Fireworks distills the pride of a nation into orchestral form, while Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne utilizes the featured singers’ appropriately majestic voices to uplift and delight.

Music for the Royal Fireworks

Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, HWV 74

At a Glance

The Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie join forces with La Chapelle de Québec and soloists Joélle Harvey, Iestyn Davies, and Sumner Thompson in a regal program of choral and orchestral works by George Frideric Handel that spans a half-century of British history. Originally written for the ascension of George II in 1727, Handel’s Coronation Anthems, including the iconic “Zadok the Priest,” have been part of British coronations for the last 300 years. Composed in 1749 for a triumphal celebration of the end of the War of the Austrian Succession, the Music for the Royal Fireworks was among the last instrumental masterpieces that Handel wrote, and it remains one of his most popular works. The stately Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne was intended for the sovereign’s birthday in 1713.
