Emanuel Ax Plays Mozart
Thursday, February 9, 2023 8 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Bernard Labadie by Dario Acosta, Emanuel Ax by Lisa-Marie Mazzucco
New York’s “hometown band,” the Orchestra of St. Luke’s performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 18, a work that features wonderful interplay between orchestra and soloist—in this case, world-renowned pianist Emanuel Ax. Also featured on the program is Schubert’s monumental Symphony No. 9. His final completed symphony—conveniently and reasonably known as his “Great” Symphony—Schubert never had the pleasure of properly hearing it performed in concert. Our privilege to do so remains one of his greatest parting gifts to the world.

Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie join world-renowned pianist Emanuel Ax for a program of gems from Vienna. The concert opens with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s splendid Piano Concerto No. 18 in B-flat Major, K. 456. One of six piano concertos Mozart wrote in 1784, this work features sophisticated interplay between the soloist and orchestra, making the score a marvel of its kind. The concert’s second half lets the orchestra resound with Schubert’s “Great” Symphony No. 9 in C Major. Though it was the last extensive orchestral work that Schubert finished before his death at age 31, the symphony sadly went almost a decade without any public premiere. The piece has proven a durable phenomenon in the two centuries since, and any performance demands—and shows—an orchestra of great strength and dexterity.
