Carnegie Hall Presents

Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra

Saturday, March 9, 2024 8 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Lahav Shani by Marco Borggreve, Daniil Trifonov by Dario Acosta
Major rising-star conductor Lahav Shani performs with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in their first collaboration at Carnegie Hall. The concert begins with the lush, enchanting minimalism of Arvo Pärt’s Swansong, whose long, soaring harmonies suggest its origins as choral music. The world-renowned Daniil Trifonov joins in Mozart’s Ninth Piano Concerto, “Jeunehomme,” often considered the composer’s first true masterpiece. The concert concludes with selections from Prokofiev’s timeless Romeo and Juliet.

At a Glance

This concert presents a fascinating variety of works from the 18th, 20th, and 21st centuries, all by beloved composers. Arvo Pärt’s serenely meditative Swansong has many of the composer’s signatures, including haunting modal harmony, hymn-like melody, and a palpable mystical aura. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 is widely regarded as the piece where Mozart became fully himself. Composed the month of his 21st birthday, it has the brilliant virtuosity, intricate structure, and emotional depth we associate with later works. Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet has an epic sweep that takes in a variety of the composer’s styles: not only the predominant “romantic” mode from his late period, but also “barbaric,” satiric, and Neoclassical aspects of an earlier Prokofiev. The ballet was initially regarded as undanceable and had a torturous history, but is now one of the composer’s most popular works—especially the orchestral suites.
