Checkoff

About

The Indiana Sheep and Wool Market Development Program is a checkoff program supporting research, promotion and educational efforts related to sheep and wool in Indiana. By collecting one-half of one percent of the net market price (e.g. $0.005 x net price) of all sheep and wool sold in Indiana, we can offer funds to producers, producer groups or industry-related groups to support projects promoting and improving the sale of sheep and wool in Indiana.

The Checkoff supports the Indiana Sheep Industry

The Indiana Sheep and Wool Market Development Council is dedicated to promoting the Indiana sheep industry in every useful way possible. Like other livestock checkoff programs, we review promotional opportunities that fit our program and put them into action. This may entail anything from sponsoring a contest at the Indiana State Fair, to compiling materials to connect with consumers, to sponsoring events that increase our market or teach the public how to cook lamb.

How can Producers and consumers help the Checkoff promote Indiana Sheep and Wool?

Voicing ideas and finding opportunities to promote the Industry is essential to our checkoff. If you have an opportunity, idea or suggestion in mind that you believe fits our goals, we ask that you please fill out a funding application for us to review and we can potentially grant funding to carry it out.

Interested in serving on the checkoff council?

The checkoff council is composed of sheep and wool producers who are elected to represent nine county-based districts in the state. If you are interested in sitting on the council, please contact us to find out more about the responsibilities of council members and how you can get elected.

How to collect the Checkoff fee

To fund promotional projects and ideas, the checkoff collects one half of one percent (.5%) of the monies collected from the sale of all sheep in the state. If you are selling your sheep directly to a buyer, are the owner or manager of a sale barn, a 4-H Extension office, or a mill manager, you may be the one responsible for filling out and sending a remittance form and the collected fee to the checkoff. Please download the remittance form for instructions on how to do this, and send the remittance form with the checkoff fee to our office at Purdue (address on form). For questions involving the collection of funds, please contact our Purdue adviser, Meredith Cobb at [email protected].

Can I get my Checkoff fee refunded?

If you are an individual who chooses not to participate in the checkoff, you need to fill out a refund form and send it to our Purdue office at the address indicated on the form. Your fee will be refunded in full.
