Beyer receives 2021 CANR Outstanding Alumni Award

Dean Beyer, Jr., Ph.D., of Marquette, Mich., will receive the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) Outstanding Alumni Award at the March 12 ANR Awards Program.

The CANR Outstanding Alumni Awards are given to those who have distinguished themselves by obtaining the highest level of professional accomplishments, and who possess the highest standards of integrity and character.

Beyer earned an associate’s degree in applied science (1977) from the Community College of Finger Lakes in Environmental Conservation, a bachelor’s degree (1980) from the University of Vermont in wildlife biology, and both a master’s degree (1983) and doctorate (1987) from MSU in wildlife ecology. While he attended MSU, he was a graduate research assistant for two projects.

Beyer retired from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as a research biologist in August 2020. He serves as an adjunct professor for the MSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife and is also a graduate faculty at Mississippi State University, Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University. His previous jobs included roles as a forest wildlife biologist, biological scientist and as a consultant.

Outside of his work, he has been a member of the Michigan Chapter of the Wildlife Society and he is a Certified Wildlife Biologist. Committees that he has served on includes Appalachian National Forest Interdisciplinary Tram, Chair of Forest Wildlife Committee and Conversation Review Committee for the Florida Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

Beyer has been recognized by the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission for exceeding standards, with superior performance from the National Forests, a high-performance rating from the Michigan DNR. He was honored as the Michigan United Conversationalist of the year in 2013.
