Event Description

Happy Birthday, Clementine Hunter!

Join staff of the National Museum of Women in the Arts for a virtual happy hour to celebrate Clementine Hunter‘s birthday! We will make a specialty cocktail in her honor, share artworks and stories, and explore the museum’s collection and archives for all things Clementine.

Registration is required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about how to join.

Special Guest:

Andra ‘AJ’ Johnson will be teaching us how to make a specially created cocktail inspired by Clementine Hunter. Johnson has been part of the DMV restaurant scene for years and currently serves as the Bar Director for the Serenata/Zumo cocktail bar in La Cosecha. She is a co-founder of DMV Black Restaurant Week and her forthcoming book, White Plates, Black Faces, tells the stories of people of color in the restaurant industry.

Featured Cocktail: Cane Sazerac

Prepare for the event by making sure you’re ready to create the specialty cocktail inspired by Clementine Hunter.

Ingredients for Cocktail:

  • Aged Rum (ex. Bacardi 8)
  • Cognac (ex. Dusse Cognac)
  • 1 white sugar cube OR 1 teaspoon of white sugar
  • Cold water
  • Peychaud Bitters
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • Cracked black pepper
  • Absinthe or Green Chartreuse (optional)
  • 1 lemon

Additional Materials:

Also requires a mixing glass, bar spoon, strainer, ice, muddler or long spoon, and peeler or paring knife. Preferred glassware: martini or coupe glass.

Featured Mocktail: Cane Creole Cooler

Ingredients for Mocktail:

  • 2 teaspoons of white sugar
  • Cold water
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • Cracked black pepper
  • Lemon juice
  • 1 whole lemon for garnish
  • Ginger ale or ginger beer

Additional Materials:

Also requires a shaker tin, strainer, ice, and peeler or paring knife. Preferred glassware: highball or collins glass.
