Cheers, Alma Woodsey Thomas!

Join a virtual happy hour to celebrate Alma Woodsey Thomas and her amazing art circles. We will make a specialty cocktail in her honor and share artworks and stories about the Washington Color School and the Little Paris Group. Guest speaker Fanna Gebreyesus, curatorial associate at Glenstone Museum, leads an exploration of #5WomenArtists behind these art movements.

Special Guests:

Andra ‘AJ’ Johnson will be teaching us how to make a specially created cocktail. Johnson has been part of the DMV restaurant scene for years and currently serves as the Bar Director for the Serenata/Zumo cocktail bar in La Cosecha. She is a co-founder of DMV Black Restaurant Week and her forthcoming book, White Plates, Black Faces, tells the stories of people of color in the restaurant industry.

Fanna Gebreyesus is Curatorial Associate at Glenstone Museum, where she manages exhibitions, installations, publications, and art photography. Since joining Glenstone in 2016, she has worked on an array of projects focusing on works by artists such as Tacita Dean, Shirin Neshat, and Faith Ringgold. Originally from the D.C. metro area, she holds an MA in Art History from American University, and a dual-BA in English and Art History from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Featured Cocktail: The Power of 5

Note: a non-alcoholic adjustment of this cocktail will be noted during the program.

Ingredients for Cocktail:

  • Mezcal
  • Apricot-fig simple syrup
  • St. Germain
  • Angostura bitters
  • Lemon juice
  • Lemon peel for garnish
  • Ice

Additional Materials:

  • Rocks glass
  • Shaker tin
  • Strainer
  • Jigger

Apricot-Fig Simple Syrup Recipe:
Combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add dried or fresh apricots and figs (amount up to you, based on your preference) and let simmer slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20-30 minutes. Strain and cool.
