Event Description

Cheers!

Join National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) Associate Curator Ginny Treanor and docent Carolyn Higgins for a virtual happy hour as they share artworks and stories about misattributions in the art world.

Why are so many great women artists missing from history books? One reason is that art by many historical women was misattributed to male artists. This phenomenon reaches back as far as certain prehistoric cave paintings, which recent studies suggest may have been made by women, through early modern women artists such as Judith Leyster (1609 to 1660) and Marie-Denise Villers (1774 to 1821), whose works were once attributed to men. Learn about how these errors still affect our understanding of art history today.

AJ Johnson, partner and bar director of Serenata, demonstrates how to make a specialty cocktail (or mocktail) in honor of these once-forgotten artists.

Featured Cocktail: Matilda

Tools: Shaker Tin, Ice, Strainer, Fruit Peeler, Paring Knife, Jigger or other measuring device
Glassware: Highball or Wine Glass

Ingredients for Cocktail:

  • 1.5 oz Civic Vodka
  • .5 oz St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
  • .75 oz Chamomile-Rosemary Simple
  • .5 oz Lemon Juice
  • 2 oz Urban Garden Brewing Chamolite 2.0 Honey Golden Ale

Add all ingredients to shaker tin except for beer. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds. Strain cocktail in to glassware. Top with Urban Garden Brewing Chamolite Ale. Add Ice. Peel a large swath of lemon and zest cocktail. Manicure edges with the Paring Knife and drop into cocktail.

Steps for making the Chamomile-Rosemary Simple (Recipe makes about a quart):
In a medium saucepan, put 32 oz water and 32 oz white sugar and heat on low heat. Stir intermittently until mixture is translucent. Add 2 tea bags of chamomile tea and 4 stems of Rosemary to the Simple Syrup and raise the temperature to medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil. Once at a boil, lower temperature back to low heat and let simmer for about 15 minutes. Take off heat, strain off tea and Rosemary and pour Simple Syrup in a non-reactive container and let cool.
