Event Description

Cheers, Edmonia Lewis!

Join staff of the National Museum of Women in the Arts for a virtual happy hour to celebrate the life and work of Edmonia Lewis! We will make a specialty cocktail in her honor, share artworks and stories, and discuss all things Edmonia.

Registration is required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about how to join.

Special Guest:

Andra ‘AJ’ Johnson will be teaching us how to make a specially created cocktail inspired by Judith Leyster. Johnson has been part of the DMV restaurant scene for years and currently serves as the Bar Director for the Serenata/Zumo cocktail bar in La Cosecha. She is a co-founder of DMV Black Restaurant Week and her forthcoming book, White Plates, Black Faces, tells the stories of people of color in the restaurant industry.

Featured Cocktail: The D.O.C.

Get ready for the event by preparing to create the specialty cocktail inspired by Edmonia Lewis

Ingredients for Cocktail:

  • 1.5 oz whiskey or bourbon
  • 0.5 oz lemon juice
  • 0.75 oz turmeric-ginger simple syrup
  • 0.25 oz Averna Amaro
  • 3 mint leaves, 1 nice mint crown
  • 1 egg white (optional)
  • 1 whole lemon
  • Italian dry red wine of your choice

Ingredients for Non-Alcoholic D.O.C.:

  • 1.5 oz lemon juice
  • 2 oz turmeric-ginger simple syrup
  • 3 mint leaves, 1 nice mint crown
  • tonic water
  • 1 whole lemon

Tools: shaker tin, ice, strainer, paring knife, cutting board

Glassware: highball

To make turmeric-ginger simple syrup (about 16 oz):

  • Add equal parts 16 oz water and 16 oz white sugar to medium-sized pot and put on stove on low heat.
  • Stir mixture until sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Chop 1-2 whole ginger stems into small circles and add to pot.
  • Add 1 full tablespoon of turmeric to pot.
  • Raise temperature to medium heat and let mixture come to a boil.
  • Lower heat and let simmer for another 5–8 minutes.
  • Remove pot from stove.
  • Strain off ginger and turmeric.
  • Let cool.
  • Put simple syrup in a non-reactive container and refrigerate; will last 3–4 weeks.
