Event Description

Making Her Mark

Join NMWA staff and special guests who consider topics relevant to our mission to champion women artists. In this episode, Baltimore Museum of Art’s Theresa Kutasz Christensen and Art Gallery of Ontario’s Alexa Greist join NMWA hosts to discuss the upcoming exhibition Making Her Mark, opening in Baltimore in October 2023 and Toronto in March 2024. The exhibition, which includes paintings and silver works from NMWA’s collection, aims to present a feminist revision of early modern European art history (ca. 1400–1800) and will broaden viewers’ understanding of women’s diverse contributions to European visual culture.

About the Speakers

Tess Kutasz Christensen is an Exhibition Research Assistant at the Baltimore Museum of Art working exclusively for the last 15 months on helping to produce Making Her Mark. She has held curatorial research positions at several museums and galleries including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Palmer Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution Museums and Archives. Tess is a specialist in provenance research and the history of women in the art market and has published extensively on Queen Christina of Sweden’s art collections. Her work has been funded by organizations including the Kress Foundation, US Fulbright, the Palatium Network, and the Lois Roth Foundation. She holds a PhD in Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art History from Penn State and a certification in Nazi-Era Provenance Research from the Center for Collecting Ethics at the University of Denver.

Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) Associate Curator and R. Fraser Elliott Chair, Prints & Drawings Alexa Greist specializes in Italian Renaissance and Baroque prints and drawings. She previously held curatorial positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. She holds a master’s degree and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania; her master’s thesis focused on the early drawings of Joseph Stella and her PhD on Italian printed drawing books. Greist most recently co-curated the exhibition I AM HERE: Home Moves and Everyday Masterpieces (AGO, April 16–August 15, 2022).
