In a recent appearance on Breitbart News, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson described a legislative plan drafted by the Senate Republican tasked with winning back the upper chamber, Senator Rick Scott (FL-R), as “a positive thing” and acknowledged he agreed with “most of” Scott’s 11 point plan.

A positive thing? Let’s break it down:

Scott’s 11 point plan to Rescue America would…

  • Sunset all federal legislation over five years
  • Which would mean that Social Security would be eliminated entirely, unless reauthorized by a Republican controlled Senate long hostile to the most successful program ever designed to combat poverty among seniors
  • Which would also mean that Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act, in their entirety, would disappear, unless reauthorized by a Republican controlled Senate that has opposed virtually every legislative effort to expand health care access and limit costs for a generation

Senator Johnson has been consistent throughout his career; in fact, his record and rhetoric in both Washington, D.C. and on the campaign trail throughout his political career clearly demonstrate how consistently hostile he has been to federal programs like those the Scott plan would sunset.

While Johnson may be consistent, Wisconsin residents have every right — indeed a responsibility — to question why their senior Senator would support a radical rollback of federal programs that have improved the lives of millions since their adoption.

If you happen to catch the Senator out on the campaign trail this year, perhaps ask him yourself, but be prepared to not like his answer.
