About this event

In 2005 Digital Cinema Initiatives issued the first World Wide Digital Cinema specification. It has been updated and can be found here: https://www.dcimovies.com/specification/index.html

This past year DCI issued two new specifications:

DCI High Dynamic Range D-Cinema Addendum, Version 1.0 (PDF)

DCI Direct View Display D-Cinema Addendum (PDF)

These new specifications cover display of HDR material and the display of content on LED direct view displays.

This Hollywood SMPTE program will explain and demonstrate these new DCI Cinema standards.

Several years ago Amazon occupied the historic Culver City Studios. When the pandemic hit the Arclight Culver City location was shut down and Amazon acquired this location and have constructed a post production facility in 6 of the theaters and remodeled 6 theaters for public cinema presentation. This the location of this month's meeting.

In 5 of the theaters they installed Samsung "ONYX" LED direct view cinema displays.

Four of these installations are 4k and one has an 8k display. They are all capable of displaying the new DCI HDR spec of up to 300 nits of brightness.

These theaters containing Direct View cinema displays feature Meyer Sound’s Ultra Reflex technology – a screen channel solution which addresses the restrictions on loudspeaker placement in these applications.

And to have test material the ASC and industry stepped up and produced a new SteM 2 test movie. This will be shown in the standard digital cinema brightness of 48 nits and the new HDR standard with peaks up to 300 nits. Also regraded PIXAR animated title clips will be shown.

Also during the pre-show time and after the presentation there will be demonstrations of the 8k Cinema display.

Presenters include Bill Mandel and Des Carey (Samsung), Jay Wyatt (Meyer Sound) Jay Holben and Joachim Zell (StEM2) and Dominic Glynn (Pixar Animation Studios). This event is produced by Bill Hogan and Nick Mitchell.

The Saturday date was chosen to allow the maximum number of persons to attend as opposed to an evening date when travel across the LA basin is very difficult.

10:00 AM - Noon Presentation
