Five Lithuanian beaches on the Baltic coast have been granted the Blue Flag, an international quality mark.

These are the central beaches of Nida and Juodkrantė on the Curonian Spit, the Birutė Park Beach in Palanga, a resort on the Baltic coast, and two beaches in the seaport of Klaipėda: Smiltynė I and Melnragė II, the Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania has said.

The Copenhagen-based International Blue Flag Jury granted the status to all Lithuanian beaches that applied, it said.

The Blue Flag is awarded for the summer season to beaches that meet international criteria for environmental education, management and information, water quality, safety and services.
