The redevelopment of Vienybės Aikštė (Unity Square) in Lithuania’s second largest city of Kaunas has won the prestigious architecture and design award, iF Design.
This marks the first time a project in Lithuania has won the award, according to a press release by SBA Group.
The project, designed by 3deluxe in Germany with a 10-million-euro investment by SBA Group, began in 2017 and was finished in May 2020 and cost over 10 million euros.
One of the biggest challenges was to integrate a contemporary design into the historically-rich Kaunas’ urban fabric.
“This was a delicate task,” said architect Dieter Brell from 3deluxe. “The scenes from last summer when the square was filled with life – from families [and] children playing to skateboarders – show us, the authors, that the challenge has been accomplished successfully.”
