Weekend Closure Planned for I-40/I-440 Junction in Southeast Raleigh

RALEIGH – N.C. Department of Transportation contractors are planning to close access from Interstate 440 East to I-40 West this weekend as part of the widening project from Southeast Raleigh to Clayton.

The closure will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday and is necessary to allow crews to complete the safe demolition of the old flyover bridge from I-440 East to I-40 East. This work is expected to be complete by 5 a.m. Monday.

The nighttime detour will direct drivers onto I-40 East (Exit 16) to Exit 303 (Jones Sausage Road) to turn around and take I-40 West.

A daytime detour (between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday), necessary because of potential traffic back-ups at the Jones Sausage Road interchange, will direct drivers to take I-40 East (Exit 16) to U.S. 70 West (Exit 306) to I-40 West. The Jones Sausage Road exit from I-40 East will be closed during this time.

Drivers should allow extra time for the detours and pay extra attention while driving through the work zone.
