STRAUSS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT
RylandKing.jpg

Ryland King, 2011 Scholar from UCSB, had written the curriculum for Environmental Education for the Next Generation (EENG) and had recruited college student volunteers who were teaching it in the Goleta and Santa Barbara elementary schools. First and second graders are taught to think in new ways about their world through activities, experiments and discussions.

As a Strauss Scholar, Ryland and his team expanded EENG, now a non-profit organization with fundraising capabilities, to other UC campuses and Cal Poly Pomona.

After Ryland graduated, the organization would rebrand as Sprout Up! and continue at UCSB, with 7 chapters, including at UC Davis, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, NYU, Barnard/Columbia. During the pandemic, volunteers created Sprout Up Explores! as an online course for Kindergarten- 4th grade. 19 videos  are available on their website, and have reached over 6000 students.

Sprout Up! is supported as a program of Environmental Volunteers, a 501 (c)(3) organization in Palo Alto.
