Why Choose Integrated Science Studies?

A bachelor of science degree in integrated science studies provides you with a well-rounded and rigorous background across the core scientific disciplines of biology, geology, chemistry, and physics. This program encourages you to think about the interdisciplinarity of science by emphasizing the fundamental tenets of each discipline: how they interact, how these interactions can be applied towards our understanding of the natural world, and the overall nature of science. You will gain an in-depth understanding of established scientific hypotheses, theories, and laws while participating in the process through faculty-led and supervised research.

There are three concentrations as part of the Integrated Science Studies degree; you must choose one.

Careers

This degree program is designed with the needs of the Lake Campus region in mind. Employers require employees skilled for the health care professions, as well as employees with broad skills in chemistry and biology for lab technician and assistant positions. This program will build the skills and education that will get you hired in careers like science advocacy, science education, scientific sales, technical and science writing, science policy and technology law, material sciences, bioinformatics, and laboratory analysis.

This program also provides you with a solid foundation for further graduate education. Because this program touches on each of the different sciences, you aren't limited in your graduate degree options. You can choose a graduate program that fits your career goals and interests.

Our students have gone on to work at:

  • Dannon
  • Charles River
  • Fishing Boat Inspector in Alaska
  • Rosner Energy Products
  • Cooper Farms

Real-World Experience

We arm our students with the knowledge and experiences they need to transition from student to professional. You'll gain hands-on experience through a variety of community-based programs, service-learning opportunities, internships, and research projects. This program is exceptionally hands-on and heavily focuses on exposing you to the work you'll do after you graduate. You'll participate in laboratory work, including testing and sample-taking, as well as skills like writing strong reports, collecting good data, and using proper field procedures. These experiences will also help you in graduate programs as you continue your education.

Success Stories

Wright State University–Lake Campus students Kelsey Nichols and Olivia McGee will both be graduating this upcoming spring semester and are paving the path for future Lake Campus students who want to pursue a career in medicine.
Integrated science studies graduate Ben Strang monitors fishing quotas on fishing vessels for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Academics, Curriculum, and Concentrations

View Bachelor of Science in Integrated Science Studies program information, degree requirements, and graduation planning strategy in the Academic Catalog.

As an ISS major, you will choose a concentration from Agriculture, Earth and Biological, or Pre-Health Professional.

Agricultural Concentration

The Agricultural Science concentration builds off of the strong foundation built by the ISS degree to prepare students for careers and/or graduate and professional programs relating to the field of agriculture. Northwest Ohio is home to a thriving agricultural industry and the Lake Campus is situated in Mercer County, which currently ranks number one in total value of agricultural products sold in Ohio agricultural production (2012 data via USDA). Many students in this region have an existing interest in agriculture and this concentration offers a unique opportunity to pursue this field of study.

Earth and Biological Concentration

The Earth and Biological concentration focuses on the complex biological and physical systems that shape the world around us. The concentration is designed to ensure you gain a balanced understanding of the geological processes that have created the Earth as well as an in-depth understanding of the ecological and biological systems housed within. You will gain comprehensive knowledge of how the two systems intermingle and influence one another. The Earth portion of the concentration develops understanding of the non-living environment while the Biological aspect engages the living world and corresponding ecological processes. Students in this concentration will have the opportunity to pursue their interests in the environment.

Pre-Health Professional Concentration

The Pre-Health Professional concentration delves deep into the anatomy and physiology of organisms with a special emphasis on preparing students for graduate and professional programs in health care fields. The coursework prepares you for such potential professional opportunities as Physicians Assistant, Medical, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary, or Optometry Schools. There is an ever increasing need for health care professionals and this concentration serves as a starting point for these in-demand fields.

Admission

Review the admission requirements to the university and complete the admission application. Identify whether you will be majoring in integrated science studies.

If you are a current student and wish to change majors, go to the WINGS Express major/minor change request form and change your major.  If you are an undecided/exploratory student, talk to your advisor about majoring in integrated science studies.

In order to be admitted into the ISS program, students must have:

  • 2.0 college GPA
  • 16 credit hours earned
  • Grade of "C" or higher in one course in the chosen major
